I installed Comcast's free virus program Norton for the second time. Now I get an error message stating "access violation at address 00423B70 in module Comcast AntiSpy.exe.' Write of address 000000D. It will not let the computer shut down without forcing. Any help would be appreciated.

There are dozens of virus protection programs out there.
Avast! and AVG are the highest rated free antivirus programs. Norton (Symantec) and McAfee are the best known for the ones you buy.
Depending on who you use for internet access, they also may have free access for you to get Norton or McAfee. Right now, both Comcast and CenturyLink give you free Norton antivirus.
Before you can do anything, uninstall norton antivirus, go to control panel and click on it, a list of items will come up, when norton shows select remove and wait for the program to uninstall, and restart the computer, go back in and remove norton live update and any other program pertaining to norton. If you have windows 7 go to my computer and "click" on top select uninstall, and follow the outline above. Now you should be able to install the program.
There are many reasons for the issue. Please check if the computer's date and time is running correctly, if not please adjust it and run a live update.
If that does not work, please download Norton intelligent updater from www.norton.com/iu and click on download definitions. Please select the first file if your computer is a 32 bit operating system or select the 4th file. Save it to your desktop. Once the download is complete, double click the downloaded file. It will update your Virus definitions. If that also doesn't work, you need to reinstall the Norton program on your computer. To reinstall, follow these steps: >> download the latest version of the Norton program from the link www.norton.com/nis11 >> save the file to your desktop >> Once the download is complete, double click the downloaded icon >> it will remove the existing version while re-installing >> Once the removal of the older version is complete, you will need to restart the computer >> after the restart, please click on the downloaded file once more if it does not come up automatically >> install the Norton program >> activate the program with the product key >> your issue will be fixed
Please check if the date and time on your computer is correct. The Norton program can't download and install updates if they are wrong.
If the issue is not getting fixed, try re-installing the Norton program
>> download the latest version of Norton 360 Premier edition from the link www.norton.com/n360p_5 >> save the file to your desktop >> double click the downloaded icon >> it will remove the existing version and restart your computer >> after rebooting, it will install the latest version >> your product key will be automatically updated >> that's all folk, your issue will be fixed

SPEAKING WITH MY EXPERIENCE: Either try Security Essentials from Microsoft OR Avast. There’s free software out there to try.
Helpful Free Software below Read On.
FREE SPYWARE Download Spybot Search & Destroy. Restart computer, then run Spybot to see what spyware comes up, AND DELET IT.
FYI---Virus Protection-- 2 programs of virus protection will conflict with each other and will actually cancel out the protection. SO just download one.
Running Spybot Search & Destroy with EITHER Avast or Avg (great Free virus protection programs ) will keep a computer in good working condition. FREE
HERE ARE SOME LINKS, THAT WOULD BE BETTER: Avira AntiVir http://www.free-av.com/ NEW *****Somthing new FROM MICROSOFT.*** 2009 ---Security Essentials http://www.microsoft.com
I had this problem as well as I used a Norton product before I switched to McAfee because of Comcast. The install worked for me after this simple tool cleaned the Norton Download Manager registry entries.
I wouldn't recommend installing McAfee as this can also slow down machines. Norton is notorious for this. Download AVG free Anti-Virus or Avast Anti-Virus & a firewall such as Zonealarm. Anti-spyware software is also a good idea. Spybot Search & Destroy & Adaware are good. If the computer is in a corporate environment you must purchase the software as the free licence only covers home use. Uninstall Norton when you have downloaded the programs & before you attempt to install the new programs.
i hope you got norton off your system before putting AVG free on. Virus programs try to fight off other virus programs by postiong false virus claims to erase the other program. eventually they will kill your hard drive. You need a product key for a good virus protectant. Norton or CA offer good, reliable protection for your dollar. What i would do, is back up any really important stuff you have there, format your hard drive and install Vista again if you have the disc and then re-install it to permanetly delete viruses. Also your system maybe slow because VIsta needs at least a dual core processor and 2 GB RAM to work like a XP machine
