Hi. When I try to take a photo on the automatic setting the camera won't click and I am getting an r11 message. I don't have my manual with me to trouble shoot. I was able to take photos yesterday with the same setting just fine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
I have the same problem - tried formatting the memory card but that didn't help. I removed the lens and put it back on and that immediately fixed the problem. I'm wondering if I somehow pushed a button and moved the lens enough for the camera to think it wasn't on correctly? Anyway this seems to have solved the problem for now. Now lets see if it lasts.
The lens is not properly connected. Reconnect the lens, or just try wriggling a bit on it to get it into place.
If the camera is taking a picture minutes after clicking, the exposure may have been set to a shot that just didin't have enough light and the automatic mode is compensating for the long exposure meaning the shutter opens and stays open for a long time then shuts. The other thing that can happen is the timer was accedentally selected and is delaying the shot. Another way that can happen is the camera is set to remote or the setting for remote is on and the camera is waiting for the signal from the remote (even if you didn't buy that accessory it is a nice feature to take portraits of the whole family including yourself as the photographer) then it relases the camera for regular shots after the set time.
Check to make sure your memory card is not full, always turn off the camera when you access the SD card or change lenes. Let me know if that helps.

Same problem!! LONG periods of time (minutes) when I can't take pictures... Yes r11 is in spot that shows number of photos remaining etc.. Greatly appreciate any help you cab give!!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH for responding. Please let me clerify my issue. I don't think I explainded it well. Memory stick empty,,, not on remote settings,,, camera may take photos then all of a sudden after one photo is taken or maybe 3 taken or maybe none take the shutter botton won't do anything. Will not even push down. The only change is in the vew finder where number of exposures are ... indicated. Instead of exposures availlable number showing 'r11' shows. ALWAYS r11... Never any other... That will last for seconds or even minutes. Last night I missed my grandsons captain of the game pictures because of this. It was the first photos of the evening.. I think that indicator has to fo with memory buffer.. but it sure doesn't seem right.!!! What am I dong or not doing???
I have the same problem, I did not notice the the error message but I can take one picture and then it seems like to camera is not focusing so when you press to take the picture it does not do anything. I already sent my camera back to Nikon and got it back yesterday and it is doing the same thing!!
Actually when I switched the lens it works fine. Can it be the lens?
hi I did the worse thing ever and drop my nikon d80. Now on the display and through the viewfinder it flashes F- - and r11 when i push down to take a photo.
It wont focus or even take a picture.
What could be the problem and is there a simple step by step way of fixing it?
I have looked through the manual and tried taking the lense on and off to avail.
