Auto transmission. When in drive in 4th gear, not responding to acceleration, in fact slowed down when going up hill. Stopped then lost drive, revved engine in drive without moving. Moved into neutral and back into drive and started moving again. After a few minutes same happened again.

You will need to give specifics of your car, meanwhile I think it is normal, because when ascending, it is only normal for your vehicle to slow down, so a quick response by the accelerator is given to the need to maintain the speed which will in turn trigger the kick-down in ur tranny and send it to the 3rd gear, u will also notice that after it stabilises, the gear will shift into 4th and 5th smoothly.
You have internal transmission damage I expect the clutches on third and fourth gear are wiped out. Its either that or a solenoid gone bad that holds those clutches pressure get it in a transmission shop soon to avoid whole transmission replacement costs.
Depending on youre mechanical ability you can spend 20 bucks for a rebuild kit on your carburator.
There tends to be many different potential issues with youre description of the problem. My best advice for you at this time, would be get the carburator re-built and check youre fuel pump/fuel filter.
But you can always go to youre local shop and get a free estimate.
Whining noise is worn gears or low on transmission fluid. It after reading your post, sorry to say but you were low on transmission fluid and your transmission needs to be replaced. You gear box has seized and every time you release the clutch even in neutral will kill your engine. The transmission shaft may have seized on the bearings in the transmission case, regardless you need a new or rebuilt transmission. Good luck friend and sorry for the bad news. Keep me posted.
