According to Rheem web site at:
How to Locate and Read your Rheem Water Heating Serial Numbers

From the serial number, the first 2 digits is the Month Manufactured, next 2 digits is the year manufactures, after there should be a letter, which is the plant code and then a 5 digit consecutive serial number.
So for serial 1209D01234, manufacturing date would be December 2009.

The age of all water heaters is listed under the serial #, not model #. you will have to call a plumbing supply house that deals in your brand of waterheater, a.o. smith, ruud, bradfordwhite, etc.

The heaters instructions say to open the heater, but i don't know how.

1) For real?
How can we answer the question without model number, brand and type water heater?
Is this a boiler? Or tank-type heater. Is the thing 2 years old or 12 years old.

2) Look on label on side of tank. Include all information shown on label.

3) Attach a photo so we can see the problem more clearly.

4) Call service technician or plumber since this is a gas appliance.

I purchased a home that has what appears to be an older Rheem Ruud rr410t 40gall (it states 175 litres). How do I determine how old it is and when it might need replacing? So far it seems ok, but not...

Label on side of tank has alpha-numeric serial number.
Look at 2nd and 3rd numbers in serial number.
For example C05... means water heater was made in 05 or 2005.

To measure if heater needs replacement, look for signs of water and rusting along bottom of tank.
Also listen for rumbling sound that says water heater has sediment build-up in bottom, and efficiency has dropped.

http://waterheatertimer.org/Clean-sediment-out-of-water-heater.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/9-ways-to-save-with-water-heater.html

If this is a gas water heater, then look at color of pilot light and burner flame.
If everything burns clear blue then water heater is working fine. If flames are yellow or orange, then combustion parts need cleaning.
Pilot is not blowing out, so the conditions needed for water heater operation are good.

Time to shop for water heater is before you need one.
For example buy scratch-n-dent water heater from local box store at a discount.
Look for box store coupons for Sears, Lowes, Home Depot, Ace, etc.
All brands of water heater are good > I recommend staying away from water heaters with blowers and electronics because parts are more expensive, and these water heaters are not proven more reliable or cheaper to operate, and are more susceptible to power surge.
Water heaters with longer warranty will last longer.

Rheem rr410T - my drain valve is leakin!!, I have now drained the hot water tank - what do I do now - just opened the cottage and had water everywhere after turning the water on...I am not a fix it person...

1) If leak is simple, then put garden hose cap over end of drain valve.
Pick up hose cap in garden department at home center or hardware store
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/garden-hose-thread-cap-76.jpg

2) Or install a garden hose and run to a drain until valve can be replaced.
The hot water will not last as long for showers until valve is fixed

3) If drain valve is cracked, it needs to be replaced.
If you are a DIY adventurer, then replace drain valve.
Since drain valve is plastic, expect to use every tool you can borrow when the plastic valve breaks off.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-water-heater-drain-valve.html

4) Call a plumber who will prefer to replace with new heater.

5) If you want adventure, then replace heater yourself and save $400 installation. Here in Houston 2011, electric heater costs 220 and gas 330 at local box store. Offer 10% less.
Open following link for gas installation, and use basic information for replacing electric.

I own a house with an electric GE hot water heater. 8ESOT12AA01 Serial # 090122 5750 I do not know how old the hot water heater is and advice about when it should be replaced. No leaks to date but I...

GE is made by Rheem, but the market is always changing. Rheem-based serial number shows tank was made in 1990.
Tank will last as long as anode rod(s) protects steel tank from rusting.
If your tank has two anode rods, then tanks lasts longer.
That's how companies determine if water heater is '6-year' or '12-year.'
I don't have manual for your product to say if you have 12 year tank. Side of tank might have information blurb besides mandatory label that shows serial number.
You can update your water heater by replacing anode rod(s) assuming they can be loosened and removed after this number of years, which is a big IF with old heaters. Your plumber might have impact wrench he uses to see if anode can come out.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Replace-anode-rod.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/Leaking-water-heater.html

If the water heater is making gurgling rumbling and/or crackling sounds then tank has sediment build-up.
You can also get a baseline of rust by flushing tank and watching if water is very rusty.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Clean-sediment-out-of-water-heater.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-will-not-drain.html

If you flush tank regularly, and inspect anode every 1-3 years, a tank will last many years longer than manufacturer's label.

We have a reliance 501 propane water heater model # 5 40 porto manufactured in 1991 We have had build up of rust in the pipes from the tank to our dishwasher and sink. Our dishwasher is not cleaning...

After 18 years there will be a build up . you could flush the tank and see what comes out, replace the line to the sink and dishwasher , then you can decide if you want to replace the tank .Which sounds like it will need to be done .

I have a Servi-star 40 Gal. electric SN# SS 0496B15258, How old is this unit? Thanks, Jim

http://www.buyerschoiceinspections.com/water-heater-ages
There seem to be 2 possible answers: Servi-star vs Servistar

Answer #1: Servi-star by American
1st 2 digits are year, 2nd 2 digits are week

This means water heater was made year 2004, 96th week ....it seems wrong.

Answer #2: Servistar by Craftmaster
1st 2 digits are month, 2nd 2 digits are year

This would mean your water heater was made 4th month of 1996

Which answer is true? 6 years old or 14 years old
If tank had 12 year warranty and came with 2 anode rods, and you have good water, and no stray current on pipes, then tank can last 14 years.
If tank had 6 year warranty and came with one anode rod, and you have hard water and a water softener, and you never changed anode rod or drained tank, then 6 years is a long life for the tank.

We have a Rheemglas Standard Electric Water Heater 81V400 B and it's leaking water from the tank and also the hot water only lasts for a short period of time. I've been reading and have read that the water...

if your water heater is leaking from the tank, and not around any fitting, then you will need to replace the heater.
you can flush the heater, once a year is always recommended, however once every 2 years is sufficient.

scale, and deposites inside the tank will cause erosion and eventually eat through the walls of the tank. not much you can do to prevent this. the steel in the new tanks just don't last like they ued to.

Water spilled out of plastic seal on lower drainage pipe

Hi,
It depends....sometimes it is hard to tell if it is the plastic that broke or the tank that is leaking. If you are sure it is the plastic then I would just have that replaced... if it is the tank then you need to buy a new heater...
Often times the tank will leak right by the threads where they welded the thread-o-let in there...
