I have a problem with my 1987 150hp Suzuki motor. The trim works intermittently on the 189V stratos. Attempted to use the secondary trim switch at bow to confirm switch operation. When trim working, then both switches work, otherwise nothing works. Also, my trim position sensor does not work, but I don't see this being related directly. Could a relay somewhere be bad, and where would I trace it. Additionally- The middle cylinder that I believe brings the motor entirely out of the water has a leak. Would this affect the trim. If so, then why is performance not always affected. Thanks Adam.

Evinrude used a shift mechanism located in the lower unit that is actuated by a rod up to the linkage in the motor housing. It could be stuck anywhere along the way or the gear that shifts on the shaft could be immobile due to rust and corrosion.
You may want to find a blowup of your exact model via a Google search. Then starting from the top look for your problem. be sure to mark the position of anything adjustable so you can at least get it back to the original position when you reassemble it. Check fuse.try connecting trim wires from t/tilt motor direct to battery supply to see if motor is ok.t/tit solenoid could be faulty, switches could be faulty.broken wire in loom or control box
Plossibly clogged intakes (grim in intakes) or thermostats not opening. I would suggest pulling the lower unit and then your thermostat housing and use a water hose to back-flush it out. Also check the thermostats in boiling water to make certain opening.
Make sure there is not a spring loaded locking lift latch engauged. If there is you will see a little movement and then the motor will sound slower. If there is no movement and the motor runs the same speed with no change you are low on hydraulic tilt and trim fluid.
