Broken bobbin winder

The bobbin winder on my Brother XL-2230 sewing machine has broken. The plastic bit broke at the bottom when I tried to turn it back to the default (neutral?) setting. Can I replace it or do I need a new machine?

For $29 at Hancock, Jo Ann's or Wal Mart you can get a thing called a Side Winder that will wind your bobbins without using the winder on your sewing machine. It has the additional advantage that you can wind while sewing. I use it even with machines that will wind bobbins.

SOURCE: Bobbin Case

ok Sim this is a bit tricky but not to tricky first turn the handwheel toward you until the hook is at one o clock postion then slide the case without the bobbin in into the hook area you may have to work the handwheel back and forth alittle but it should slide in just remember that the case should ride in the rim. also take the needle out first that way you wont get stuck trust me it happiens.

Put the thread through one of the holes. Then put the bobbin on the spindle. Pull about 3 or 4 inches out of the hole and hold on to it. Start winding the bobbin. After about ten turns, or when the winding thread is secure, you can stop the machine and cut off this 3 or 4 inch tail. To insure that the thread winds up and down the bobbin and not off the top or bottom, there is probably a metal bobbin tension disk that the thread must pass around before it goes to the bobbin. It is probably on the left of the machine and may or may not be part of a thread guide. The thread must pass around this disk on its way to the bobbin in order to put tension on the thread so it will wind properly. If you can't find the disk, which is a small metal button or screw with some type of somewhat moveable spring cap, you can just get the thread to pass through your thumb and forefinger. Hold your hand 6 or 8 inches to the left of the bobbin and pass the thread between your thumb and forefinger so that it makes the thread go in a direct straight line to the bobbin. Pinch the thread only enough to keep it taught but not tight and let it flow through your finger to the bobbin. The thread should go up and down evenly on the bobbin. If not, move your hand up or down to position it so the thread will wind up and down smoothly. It will not be necessary to move your hand once you find the correct position needed for winding.

SOURCE: Thread tension for Brother XL 2230.

If you have pattern dials set correctly then I might guess that one or more sets may have been missed when the thread was being set up in the machine. most of these models show either arrows or numbers for each or way the thread needs to be routed.

make sure that when you insert the thread *top hole bottom to top* that you turn the bobbin itself until you hear a click *that is the spring sliding into the ****.

You would be better off using a multi zig zag stitch using an anti static needle size 12 if possible

Question about Brother Sewing Machines Brother XL-2230, I can't thread the bobbin! I watched video on U-tube and it's same steps I've used. Bobbin turns very slow

Winding the bobbin:
be sure the thread goes clockwise all around the bobbin tension. It will cross itself before it heads toward the bobbin winder mechanism.
Brother XL 2230 Operation Manual Threading The Machine Winding The Bobbin

Place the bobbin into the bobbin holder so the thread will unwind counter-clockwise. Push the bobbin down. Pull the thread toward the front of machine (toward you, into the slit and then doubleback to the left through the tunnel and then through the opening.

Brotherxl2230 can i safly replace washer on my bobbin winder , i have bought the washer from brother for 27 pence but need to know can i take the back off the machine to replace it without lots of sp

A screwdriver or two is typically all you need - look at the screw heads to see what shape they are. If you don't have the right screwdriver, often you can get them with multiple styles of bits without it costing a great deal.

I don't have one of these machines specifically, but if the washer can't simply be lifted off, and you need to remove the back, there ought to be just a few screws to deal with.

How do i get into xl 2230 in order to replace the o ring on the bobbin winder please

Do you have a manual ? If not, Brother may well have one you can download, and there a many sites online that sell copies of manuals too.

Typically, it's not hard to get into a mechanical machine. There are usually just a few screws that have to be taken out to give access to most places inside. Look at the screws to see what kind of head is on them so you know which screwdriver bit you need.

Bobbin winder won't spin Cannot load bobbin because the spindle does not revolve otherwise machine sews well.

Can be dirt or particles that have made it stuck with friction and so a resetting /overhauling with good oiling, degresing will resolve the matter, provided there is wearing off in the drive.
First use a degreasing spray before you can disemble.

HOW TO THREAD THE BOBBIN

Take the thread-end from the thread spool to the left, around the bottom of the "silver" "button"; across the top of the button and back to the right to the bobbin winder.

Run the thread-end through a hole in the side of the bobbin spool, hold onto the thread (pull through about 5" of thread) and place the bobbin spool onto the the bobbin winding pin.

You may have to turn a bit to the left or right to get the spool in place. Push the bobbin spool to the right; against the bobbin winding wheel.

Press on the power pedal - keeping hold of the thread-end.

As the bobbin fills, the thead end will twist.

When you can not longer hold on. Stop the machine and clip the thread end then continue to wind the bobbin.

Brother xl 2230 - cannot fill spool as holder does

Check the bobbin winder rubber......remove the top cover and take a look. Remove worn rubber and use as a sample when you go to the Brother Store....also have your model number handy. If you cannot access easily, phone Brother store and ask for a quote to replace.....if it is any more serious they should confirm with you prior to doing additional work.
