most sliding gates suffer form dirt, grass , rocks in the gate track so constant cleaning of that track is essential
small twigs , rocks will slide along with the wheels on opening but are an obstruction for the wheels on closing
most closing gates run a cog and rack system at the bottom ot the gate so check that the mesh of the rack and cog is correct at either end
Since there are few details on the circumstances of when it won't open provided I will try to guess what is happening.
Usually this is related to the strength of the transmitter (clicker or remote) signal. If you have radio interference from ham radios, air fields or other government agency, it will affect the reception or your gate receiver. Other common issues include the distance from the operator, how long you hold down the button, and the age of the battery in the transmitter.
You might try extending the receiver antenna up higher. If this makes it worse, you may need a directional antenna like the Linear EXA 2000.
We have also found the Linear SMDRG narrow band receiver to work well when we have interference issues.
There are several possible causes, but the first to check is the limit switches. When the gate opens, it is supposed to trip a limit switch that tells the mechanism that the gate is fully open. If the switch is not tripped, it will not respond properly to a command to close. It may think the gate is running into an obstruction and then just shuts down.
The opener may have been mounted improperly or may have slipped from it's original mounting location. You may not be able to make an adjustment because the arm is already fully extended.
You may have to re-position the gate opener.

the auto close has been set or the motor has been set up in reverse and it is auto reverseing, make sure the gate is opening up all the way, if it is not just help it along and see what happens.
the elite does not have that function, your are going to need to look for a time clock that holds open your gate...... the outside phone system or a programmable time clock that has been added to your gate...... oh this is an old post sorry. :)
