Problem with stability

I am recording using the Sonar LE program included with the UA 4FX. The sound card frequently stops working when I am using the program. I have to close the Sonar program and reconnect the usb to get it going again. Sometimes it will run smoothly for a bit and then stop working again. My desktop has a an Intel Celeron processor at 851 Mgz, 248 MB of Ram. I use Windows XP, Version 2002, Service Pack 2. I have disabled the onboard MME sound card, tried reinstalling the UA-4fx number of times, set the system properties to Background, and adjusted the buffer rates in various ways. Would appreciate any advice on what i can do next? Also when I open the volume control through Start-Programs-Accessories-Volume Control-Properties, there are no volume controls available for recording with the UA-4fx as the mixing device? I have been unable to convert midi files to audio using Sonar because of this. Again any help would be greatly appreciated.

Celeron CPU's will struggle with making music and limit what you can do with audio. Celerons are ok to play music but nor really for making music. Firewire is a better option for making music as it's really fast unlike USB. An option would be to get a faster CPU and try the soundcard again. But i would not use USB audio and would use an Audiophile 2496 soundcard as they are really cheap. Also midi is data and not audio, midi just works virtual instruments and is able to control keyboards through midi out. But first try a better CPU as a celeron isant that good for makign music. I know becouse i've been there done that and go really upset with the same problems your having at the moment. I played the midi files on cuabse and recorded it onto an audio chanel.

Sonar LE: no playback b/c "NO MIDI OUTPUT" selected

You have to go in to the Sonar configuration and select what the default MIDI and WAV input and output devices are. That is usually handled by the ASIO driver. In your case you would select the USB mic for input, and for output you need to select your sound card. For midi you need to configure the midi controllers and the software synth or soft instrument you are using.
If you need any more detailed help I need to know what version of Sonar LE it is and what sound card. I am guessing it detected the mic and just needs the output device configured as I mentioned.

No midi sound

In sonar go to the options menu and select: Audio -->advance. and from the list select the "Asio" driver, then you'll have a new midi output (synthe sw...) select it to have a sound while playing MIDI files.

No sound out from input

It's probably your computer, more specifically the type of application you're running it on/in. Also, when you install or fiddle with the settings, you have to be careful because it can be so confusing fixinfg them.

SONAR LE NO AUDIO

Microsoft re-engineered the audio bus for Windows. HD Audio is hardware specific, in the sense that specific drivers have to be written to make a piece of hardware compatible with it. Roland is not writing a driver for the UA 25 because they want you to buy an UA 25EX. Get my drift? The UA 25 uses Kernel Streaming, the old way, which exists in parallel, sort of, with the HD Audio bus. But the new ways are always prioritized over the old ways in software, so there is bus contention (glitching).

To fix this there are a few things you can try:

1) Roll back to SP2. SP3 implements the HD Audio bus, so don't use that implementation. If your laptop has an HD audio sound card then I doubt it would work, but your UA 25 would.

2) Try ASIO 4 ALL. This fixed everything but glitching in VST instruments.

3) Reduce the amount of stuff your computer is doing. Optimize your OS by turning off the cute shaded windows and desktops and various processes that you don't need to see or use. There are sites for this. This increases available RAM, CPU time, etc.

4) Video hardware acceleration, sometimes, would fix bugs in software left in by not so clever programmers.

4) You can always just give-up and go along with the bastards and buy new stuff and toss the old stuff.

Timing and noise

That's usually caused by problems with the usb port on your computer. The best solution would be to buy an PCI USB CARD that you would use only for your UAFX4.
