Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 530 desktop. My computer won't start, when I push the power button, it won't turn blue. After I cleared the CMOS, I found in CMOS settings that Drive A is set to 1.44M 3.5' diskette, so I reset it to "none", then everything seems fine. But after I turned it off last night and tried to turn it on this morning, it happened again, I have to reset Drive A to "none"(I did save the settings, apparently the computer can't keep it). My question is how do I save the setting of Drive A so that it won't change back to 1.55M, 3.5' ? Thanks a lot! Quinn
Sounds like the CMOS battery is dead. You will find this battery on the mother board. It is a round watch battery, pull it and take it to a store like Walmart to get a proper replacement. I bet if you check your system time, it is wrong too.

Yes you are right, the system time is wrong too, it was set to Jan.1 2007.

I replaced the battery yesterday. This morning it happened again, it won't start, the power button is not blue after I pushed it.
Here is some details : it seems like this only happens after the power is off for a "while". If I soft-restart the computer it will restart, no problem; if I turn off the computer and restart it by pushing power button(hard-restart), it also works fine.
But if I turn off the computer and restart it next morning, it won't restart. Then I have to clear CMOS and set 1.44M 3.5" diskette to "none", then everything is OK.
It looks like when the computer is power off over night, CMOS setting will go back to 1.44M, 3.5" and time is also set back to Jan. 01, 2007.
Once the computer is start it, everything is normal, I can do anything as usual.

That is a POST (Power On Self Test) error and happens before the operating system loads, in other words it isn't a Windows error but a hardware error.
Does the pc boot successfully after the error?
Does the diskette drive work properly,
can you read and copy files to it?
In all likelihood the diskette drive might be "kaput". If you have a hardware diagnostic utility for the pc run it and see what it reports.
If the drive is bad just replace it with a new one, they're inexpensive
and easy to replace.

Sorry for the delay, very very busy this week, with my "real" job..lol Anyway, it still sounds like the cmos battery is not working. If you have an OLM meter, you can check the battery to ensure it is putting out the correct voltage. Sometimes these batteries sit for years and go bad in the packaging. Another thought would be the battery is not properly connecting to the cmos. This could be caused by improper insertion or possibly a bad solder joint. If it is a bad solder joint, you will want a professional repair done to the mother board.
