Dvd/vcr combo, vcr is fine ,but dvd no picture,or sound, disc reads.
The vcr part of the combo works just fine,no problems there. The dvd part however is not.Whenever I put in a dvd,the disc reads ,but screen remains black,no sound,no picture. When I switch back to vcr, screen is blue, and vcr feature works fine. I no longer get the Apex logo or screen when I switch to dvd.Just black screen. This just happened one day, with no warning. Also, there is a small red symbol in right corner of player screen, only appears when dvd is trying to be used. I have tried switching channels,video1,video2, and even tried switching from regular cable wire that attatches to back of tv,to red/yellow/white cords that plug in front of tv.So, the movie is playing, but no sound/picture. Also, just something I tried, when I push record,I can hear a brief snippet of the sound. Then goes black again, and all is quiet.I have had this machine for about 1 year, and I got it from a pawn shop. This is the first time ever having problem. I just bought some new dvds, and now I cant watch them! I would be ever so grateful to anyone who can offer solution or suggestion! Thank you

Also I do not get the typical blue screen that usually preceeded the picture.Same problem. VCR works fine with sound and picture, but one day out of the blue the DVD player quit working. It could be your disc is scratched or DVD+R can't be read in the DVD player. Check for any scratches. Then pop in the disc in to your PC DVD, to see if it's readable.
The JVC DR-MV1S DVD Recorder / VCR Combo does not suppport DVD+R, only DVD-R, -RW etc.
At least mine only supports these formats, as when I first bought mine, I got some blank DVD's they were DVD+R.
I recorded a movie onto one on my PC, then tried playing it in the JVC unit... no go!
Instruction manual (available for D/load online) proved to me that I could not play +R disks!!
This is a common problem for all combo units. The high voltage of the TV section attracts large amounts of particulate dust from the air and often it collects inside the DVD unit. The best way to deal with this is to clean the lens of the DVD unit u sing a cotton swab and alcohol. The store bought "cleaners" MAY work, but that is rare. These cleaners are nothing but small brushes embedded into a disc. They attempt to brush off hte dust. This rarely works. Open up the unit (if you feel comfortabel in doing so) to access the DVD section. Remove the top cover and carefully clean the lens. That should resolve the problem.

Wish I could. I have the 4600 combo and the VCR works fine. The DVD stopped working many months ago and just yesterday started working fine again. Worked fine for two days and then stopped, picture froze, and all I got out of it, is the picture is loading. Wont give me back my DVD nohow, so have opened the case and stole it back. Tray will not open at all. Trying some repairs, will holler if succesful
I imagine you have checked the disk for scratches top and bottom, if so you can purchase a cd/dvd lens cleaner cdrom as the laser may need realigning and cleaning.
Your unit has it seems to have developed a video problem. it could be in the video switching IC or the video processor. Its going to need a trained technician, who knows how to use an ocilliscope to find the video problem.. Good Luck
