Freezer is completely covered with white ice

The freezer is not defrosting, but is staying cold. The refrigerator is warm. We have replaced the automatic defrost thermostat (round metal object with pink and orange wires). We are having to manually defrost it every week, it seems. It is a GE Hotpoint Model HSS251FMD WW and Serial # is GD283O87.

I have the same symtoms. I defrosted the coils in the freezer compartment. The fan comes on. I put an ohm meter across the heater and got approx. 24 ohms. I also went to the back of the refer and checked a fuse on a circuit board and it is open. I can't make out what the ampere rating is.

All I can determine is that it is 250V slow blow. Can you help?

Sometimes a faulty door rubber can make the freezer work overtime. Does the door close firmly?

  • Anonymous Oct 25, 2008

it could need a new motor. check the motor at the back if it is warm then it is okay. If it is really hot to the touch, then it could be on it's way out.

Frigidaire frs26h5asb5

Hi Gary,

If your evaporator is not completely frosting over (top to bottom) this normally means the unit doesn't have a proper charge or the compressor can't pump all the freon as it needs to. I would check the charge, this should read "0", if less not enough, if higher than the compressor is failing. I hope this helps.

A kenmore side by side model 106 5661 2500 has warm refer and cold freezer

If the freezer temps are normal and the refrigerator is warmer than normal, the the air flow from freezer to refrigerator is being hampered either by ice on the evaporator or the freezer is stuff in such a way that normal airflow between freezer and fridge is hampered. If the auto defrost is not working properly you will have warmer freezer temps and a relatively warm refridge. Check the defrost timer and defrost heater element.

Refrigerator is warm and will not cool food and the freezer is iced up

Theres the problem an iced up freezer, the cold for the food compartment comes via a fan in the freezer, no flow, no cold, firstly defrost it completely, check fans are working, if they are ok then it's probably your defrost hester element.

Kenmore classic bottom freezer refrigeration warm but freezer is cold

I would guess you have just caused a build up of ice to block the air way, which normally takes cold air into the fridge. manually defrost (unplug and wait until the ice goes away) then restart and it should be fine

Freezer is very cold but main frig is not cold at all, we defrosted cleaned all ice built up under plate in freezer and still warm

did you check freezer fan behind the freezer? If not working check the wiring for it. If broken fan replace it. Find no leak in door gasket. Temp setting must be at least 5 degree.Thanks.

Freezer way too cold, refrigerator side too warm on side by side.

This can be caused by lots of faults first inspect the evaporator in the back of the freezer for ice build up if this is the case the defrost system has a fault, if not the unit that opens between the wall of the freezer and the fridge may be faulty check for the grills opening and closing

Kenmore elite 596 73503201 no cooling in top compartment

if the freezer is getting cold the problem is due to the cold air from the freezer not getting into the refrigerator. There are several things that can cause this problem. The coils in the freezer icing up and not defrosting properly is one of the things that can cause the refrigerator not to get cold enough. Another problem is the fan that blows the cold air from the freezer compartment into the refrigerator, not working. When the compressor is running open the refrigerator's door and push the switch that makes the light go out. You should hear the fan blowing the cold air from the freezer into the refrigerator, when this switch is pushed in. If the fan is working then you will need to find what is blocking the air flow. Iced up coils are a common problem. The icing problem can be due to a defective defrost timer or something defective in the defrost circuit. Click here for more information. Check for these problems and let me know what you have found.

Refrigerator nor freezer was not getting cool enough. We have a side by side refrigerator. Last night we cleaned the freezer and saw there was built up ice inside at back..it is a self defrosting...

Remove back cover in freezer to completely thaw out. Check continuity on defrost heater replace if needed, also replace defrost thermostat, that is probably the problem.
