I have the same problem. A line of light brown on white clothing. Usually white dress shirts or light colored pants. We suspect the rubber around the front loading opening. If we run a towel in there, it comes out really dirty, icky. The dirt seems to gather there. Even after wiping it out - no easy task - I get the stains, so not convinced that's the cause.

The washer is only 4 years old.

I have a Whirlpool Duet front loader. In addition to the mold issue on the gasket, I also get a goldish brown line of stain on the white clothing. It especially affects light weight clothing. If it is missed and the clothing goes into the dryer the stain never comes out.

I have a Whirlpool front loader washer also, I am going to try rust remover to see if those brown pencil like stains come out. It seems to also get on the most expensive items or new items. They are all cotton as well.... hmmmmmmmmmmmmm....Let you know how the rust remover goes.

I had the same problem, and it turns out that it is NOT the seal. It is the liquid fabric softener. The fabric softener dispenser needs to be cleaned periodically or it gets a black waxy, goopy, build up. It is this same buildup that ends up staining your clothes with dark brown or black stains. Just remove the dispenser and wash it our very well and the problem will be gone.

Its the felt drum seal (clothes getting stuck in there and getting the greasy adhesive on them). I took a Q-tip and slid it between the felt seal and the metal, and the color and consistency of what came out was the same as the marks on the clothes.

Call a Whirlpool tech, they can replace

Kenmore top loading washing machine does not clean clothes well.

I would seriously consider getting a newer machine. A brown stain could be rust, or an oil leak. Either way it probably is not worth putting any money into. If this helps, please rate my answer. Thank you.

Starting to leave brown oily like stain on clothes

The first place that I'd check would be the small metal screens inside the openings on the water inlet valve. They can get really rusted, epecially in areas with hard water, so I would recommend removing the water supply hoses and take a gander at the screens. They can sometimes release the iron oxide into the wash water and cause brown stains or blotches on clothing. Hope this helped and best wishes.

Washer whining when washing and spinning leaving brown stains on clothes

Turn water off. Remove hoses and clean the rust out of the strainers at hose end. If they are clogged they will sound funny when water goes through them.

My Kenmore Elite HE3 washer doesn't get the dirty laundry clean. It redeposits the dirt on the clothes, causing brown stains. I had a Sears rep look at it when it was new (5 years ago), and he said it was...

Brown stains are likely from the felt seal. The adhesive used from the factory disintegrate over time, and when you replace the felt - use some silicone instead.

My Washing machine stains clothes; they come out with brown rusty stains. Otherwise the washing machine works fine.

I've had this problem for many months now.  Even when it ruined my favorite tops & jeans, I couldn't get myself to let go of them... Good thing though because I have found a solution!  Make a paste using cream of tartar and hydrogen peroxide.  Generously spread the paste over the stains and let sit for about 5 minutes.  Boil enough water to fully immerse the stained garment in.  While waiting for the water to boil, figure out a way to wrap/roll the garment so that the paste doesn't come off when put into the water.  You want the paste to melt onto the stain while in the hot water.  After wrapping/rolling the garment, secure it with string or thread (anything that won't melt) that doesn't have color, just in case it bleeds.  After the water has come to a full boil, immerse the garment into the hot water and let it soak.  After about 15 minutes, remove the garment from the water.  The water should still be very hot, so I use cooking tongs to get it out.  Let the garment cool down to room temperature while still rolled up.  After it has fully cooled, unwrap the garment.  There should be very little or none of the paste left on the stain.  If there is still a great deal of paste, you may want to soak it again until the paste melts a bit more.  Once the paste is gone, rinse of the garment and it should be clean & stain free.  :o)

Problem with front load washer

Are stains a brown rusty color? If so, this may be an indication that the rear drum bearing is going bad. The bearing itself cannot be replaced. You will need to replace the entire back shell of the wash tub. Hope you have a warranty. This can be an expensive repair. Let me know if this is the case.
