Can't scan on HP Photosmart C4380 even tho printing works fine

My HP Photosmart C4380 is working fine for printing but I can't scan from the computer (Vista). when I go Scan from HP Solution Center it tells me the printer is disconnected even tho it prints fine. Wireless connection.

I have the same problem using XP - prints fine but will not scan.I tried the "best solution", but the product does not appear in the Scanner and camera wizard list. I tried installing the C4380 as a scanner, but it could not find the autorun.inf driver file on the installation CD. Find that if I initiate a scan on the C4380, it returns a "USB or Wireless network not detected" error. If I initate a scan on the computer the HP Scan software bombs out. Sny help appreciated

I am sick and tired of the problems i have with this PSC, but i have found a scanning solution and thought i would share it.

Use Microsoft Paint. It's not the best application in the world, but you can insert a scan from a scanner in the 'file' menu. :0) The scans are not of the best quality, but i'm grateful i can scan at all with this useless PSC.

Try scanning without HP imaging software

HP Photosmart C4380 Direct Scan button doesnt function in VISTA
Use the built-in feature of the Windows operating system, called Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), instead of the HP software to scan. Follow these steps to perform a WIA scan.

  1. Make sure that the product is on and that the cable is correctly connected.
  2. Click Start , and then click Control Panel .
  3. Click Printers and Other hardware , and then click Scanners and Cameras .
  4. Look for an icon representing the product, and then review the following information for further instructions:
  5. Double-click the icon to start the Scanner and Camera Wizard . Follow the on-screen instructions to scan images or documents to the computer
  6. If the WIA scan was successful , use the Scanner and Camera Wizard to scan instead of the HP software. To use the HP software, continue to the next step to continue troubleshooting. However, it is not necessary to do so.
  7. If the WIA scan was unsuccessful , continue to the next solution.
  8. Fully uninstall and reinstall the HP software Follow these steps to completely uninstall and then reinstall the HP software. Step one: Uninstall the software Use one of the following methods to uninstall the software. 1. Insert the software CD into the CD-ROM drive on the computer.
    2. If the Welcome installation screen appears, click Exit to close it.
    3. On the Windows task bar, click Start , and then click Run (Can't scan on HP Photosmart C4380 even tho printin - c01463550.gif ). The Run dialog box appears. 4. Click Browse . The Browse window appears.
    5. Navigate to the CD-ROM drive that the software CD is in, and then double-click the drive.
    6. From the list of folders and files on the CD, double-click the Util folder.
    7. From the list of folders and files inside the Util folder, double-click the CCC folder.
    8. From the list of folders and files inside the CCC folder, double-click the Uninstall_L3.bat file or Uninstall_L3_64.bat if a 64-bit operating system is installed on the computer. The Browse dialog box closes, and the path to the Uninstall _L3.bat file appears in the Run dialog box. It's a work-around, but use Task Manager, find the svchost.exe that's running and kill it. Wait a second and scanning will start. Leave hpqkygrp.exe alone.

I have had this problem numerous time with my C4380.
I found that if I rebooted the printer and then the PC it would then reconnect to one another and print.

Can my HP Photosmart C4380 support Microsoft Office Professional 2007 Fax and Scan? Or must the HP fax and scan only be used?

Sorry, Fax and Scan is part of Windows Vista not MS Office. I have been advised by PC World team that this printer (HP Photosmart C4380) does not have the necessary drivers to support Vista Fax and Scan wirelessly and can only operate with the HP Fax and Scan which is very basic and only seems to function via USB cable, not wirelessly. Update drivers may become available.

Trying to instal photosmart C4380 all in one wirelessly on toshiba L40-17M from supplied disc installed printer ok first time but scanner not recognised, scan button says computer connected but computer...

Photosmart C4380: good hardware, appalling software. Shameful that it's on the market at all.

WIRELESS PROBLEM

You have to install the printer as USB first. Then, once it's all installed, load up the CD again and 'Add device', choosing the wireless option. It's crucial that you leave your USB cable in the whole time. Take it out right at the end. Once you've added a device, you'll have two printers installed. One will be called 'Copy 1' - that's the wireless one. It should all work okay, and you can delete the USB one.

SCAN PROBLEM AND ERROR MESSAGES

When I did this everything seemed to work fine. BUT - after a wee while the software started playing up. The scan function didn't work at all, HP was depositing all sorts of bugs all over my computer, I had error messages coming up at shutdown, all sorts of gremlins.

So this is what I did.

I totally uninstalled all HP software.

I downloaded the updated Photosmart Basic Drivers from the HP website. They are here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=3221646&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=11&submit.x=9&lang=en&cc=us

Once you've downloaded the file and run it, the new drivers will be installed but NO SOFTWARE. Again, you have to do the whole setting it up as USB and then leaving the cable in and adding the device wirelessly. But if you do this with the HP drivers and ignore the installation CD, then everything should work perfectly.

Of course this means no HP software at all. But who needs it? I use Microsoft's scanning software, which is fine, and it has no problem printing.

Basically HP's software is BLOATWARE that doesn't even work. It screws up your computer.

Good luck!!
