I have a dell4600 with ide drives only, error message drive not found and in bios it can only go to auto

When it is detected, go to my computer, right-click, untick that (stupid) option, immediately you see the message uncompressing and its done. Put your hard-disk back in to your machine its ready.. w7 insert your OS CD
go to DOS window and type in your OS driver (usualy C:/

type in bootrec /FixMbr
then type in bootrec /fixboot

then type in bootrec /rebuildbcd
then type in exit

restart your computer

Try setting the jumper on the IDE hard drive to SL (ie slave).

That problem can be a couple of things.

The CD/DVD Drive may be failing ,or the actual IDE Controller built into the motherboard is bad.

You will need to determine which it is.

To do that - find an identical computer and see if you can remove the CD/DVD Drive from your laptop and swap it with that computer's drive. Then try to boot up your laptop with the "Known Good" drive in the system. If the same error occurs - then you will know that the IDE Controller on the motherboard has failed.

You can try to upgrade your system BIOS and this might trick the IDE Controller back into working, but it is a slim chance. Try it anyway.
