Question about Dometic Rooftop RV Air Conditioner

RV Rooftop AC Unit

I have an RV with a rooftop AC unit. Often when the AC shuts off the compressor continues to make a fairly loud humming noise and then all of a sudden it will stop with a bang (enough force the RV shakes). Turning the temperature control unit to the off position does not stop the humming. Last evening I had the thermostat set to the off position and about every 20 minutes the humming noise would start and after 10 or 15 minutes stop with a big shudder. It's obvious that something is sticking and not disengaging- but what? I'm a little confused as to why it does it when the AC unit is not even in the on position on the thermostat. Any ideas?

Sounds to me like your fan is hitting something
Remove the cover and turn the fan by hand ( with the power off ! ) See what it is hitting

Sounds like you may have a couple of problems there. First, have you checked incoming voltage to make sure you are getting 100-120 VAC at the AC control board in ceiling? If that's ok, try removing/disconnecting Ac compressor wire at ceiling control box and see if compressor shuts off then. May be a capacitor for compressor going or shot, and possibly relay in control box sticking, or bad wiring to thermostat. Have you had any lightning in the area prior to all this happening?

Compressor will not stop running

There has to be a stat or switch or controller of some kind on the rv. I would check that first. If you have a battery operated stat then try changing the batts, otherwise it could be the contactor on the unit or a bad stat.

Yes, not good for compressor to stay on after being shut off, and hitting the breaker to stop it is a good idea. Sounds like you have a faulty/sticky relay. Not an expensive part, and shouldn't take any longer than 1/2 hr to change. Have a technician, or electrician look at it and give them a model number of unit so they can make sure they have a relay with them when they come. That way, another trip back, as well as a service charge will be eliminated. You have capacitors in the same area, that are very dangerous to work around if not experienced, so make sure the person is experienced, to avoid shock from 250-370 volts stored in those capacitors.

I have my dometic Rooftop ac unit. The heatstrip/fan run perfectly but when I turn on the ac...the fan runs good but when the compressor kicks on it just hums.

The compressor coming on does make a slight "humming" sound which is normal. Is the unit cooling properly? Do you think it is louder than before?
