I worry about the power strip. Any electrical load is bad news for power bars. Significant fire hazard. (Think like a space heater under a desk... The load of the heater will overload the power bar over time.)
Plug directly into a wall outlet and test again.
If you are forced to using an extension cord, it MUST be heavier than the power cord to the fireplace model.

I would suggest looking under the bottom louver of your fireplace as you have a b-vent or direct vent gas fireplace. From the looks of it alone it appears as its an early model Heat-N-Glo fireplace. If you flip down the bottom panel, where the two gold strips are at, underneath the gas valve you will find a sticker or a plate that has the model, manufacturer, and serial number. I work for a manufacturer that has been in the fireplace business for over 30 years and I'm betting $10 to a donut that is a Heat-N-Glo fireplace. Once you get the model, manufactuer, serial number, and date code sometimes you can search at www.heatnglo.com for AUTHORIZED dealers who can service your fireplace properly instead of a chimney sweep who may or may not be qualified to "trouble shoot" what is going on with the fireplace. It looks like an 8000GDV to me.
Best guess is a new pilot assembly if its a direct vent. If its a b-vent then a high limit switch might be needed as well with it cutting off that fast. It also could be a flue disconnect. Long story short I would find out the model, manufacturer, and then get on the manufacturer's website or call them to find out an AUTHORIZED servicing dealer for your fireplace. I hope this helps.

More than likely, the interior of the unit needs to be cleaned. When it's in operation, it sucks dust and link into the fan and heater elements. When it's not, spiders love to go into and build nests. If badly clogged, it can cause the heating element to over heat and shut off. Carefully, removing the back panel of the stove will give you access to just about everything. As far as the flame is concerned, the bulbs may need replacing. Although, it's unusual for all of them to go bad at one time. You or your nephew can replace them after the unit is cleaned. A vacuum that has a hose, brush attachment and crevice tool, will work well in the cleaning of the interior. Be sure to turn the Master ON/Off Switch to OFF & Unplug the unit, before attempting and maintenance on it.

If after performing all of the above, the unit still doesn't work properly, contact Dimplex USA, Technical Service 888-346-7539, for further advice.

It's probably the Temperature Cut Off Switch. It turns the heater off if it's overheating. To reset the switch turn the Main On/Off Switch to OFF . Wait 5 minutes and turn it back ON.

If you need to continuously reset the heater, unplug the unit and call Dimplex North
America Limited at 1-800-668-6663.
