Sansa m240 MP3 Unknown Artist

I have made sure that all the id3 tags are listed in the advanced properties summary on all of my mp3's. When attempting to sync with the m240 I get the title of the song but never the artist or album. Keeps displaying Unknown Artist. None of my music is protected so that's not the issue. Anyone have an idea on what the problem is. I've used Windows Media Player, Yahoo Search Engine, and even used an id3 tag software to try and fix. All programs I've used to sync display the id3 tags but they won't load to the m240. Help.

    I'm new to offering in this posting, but I have found a method that seems to be working for me, after a year of trying.
    I have 6 M230's and 1 M240. that I updated the firmware with Sandisk's auto updater, which I dont like, but oh well.
    Reformat. Make sure that all ID3 tags are perfect, both Ver 1 and 2, Copy everything to the root directory. disconnect, go to the unknown folder and write down the titles. Reconnect and Recopy those titles to the 'audible' folder.
    I do my own voice recordings which have to be in order, and this has now worked for me.

    my sansa m240 won't display the artist or album; lists as "unknown" however does display the song title.i used windows media player sync to add the files.in my media player all information is displayed correctly.the actual place where the songs are stored there is only the song name.is that my problem and if so how do i tag edit the files in "my music" and PLEASE be as simplistic as possible; thanks for any help

    Mine is the same way. But mine doesn't even show the song name. Everything is unknown. But on my Sansa Express it shows everything just fine.

I can confirm that the following method works for me (finally):

1. Download and install Mp3tag (I'm using v. 2.48)
2. "Change" or "Add" the directory in which the mp3s reside

3. Make certain you have data for "Artist", "Album Artist", and "Album" (fill in if needed)
4. Select all mp3s and click the "Save" icon (or right-click them and choose "Save tag")
5. Transfer back to your Sansa device

We should admit that a well tagged MP3 collection makes everything from organization to playback easier. But not everyone is fortunate enough to have a perfect music library. There are still so so so many people now suffering lots of a music library with missing or even misspelled song details. If you are the one of them, you come to the right place since I am about to show the solution on how to fix and edit ID3 tags automatically. Fortunately, it's not a big deal to change ID3 tags for your music collection just with the help of Leawo's ID3 Tag Editor. Download Leawo Tunes Cleaner ' Leawo Tunes Cleaner for Mac and install it.

Step 1: Import and Scan Music Library

Run this MP3 metadata editor after installation. As soon as it opens, you could click "Start to clean iTunes" button, or hit "Open music file" to find all songs with incomplete ID3 tags on your iTunes and other music library.

Step 2: Choose songs without ID3 tags for fixing

All songs with incomplete tags will be listed on program interface as the scan is over. On Sansa M240 go to USB mode and switch to MSC!!!, then copy your music to AUDIBLE. It works for me!!

Solution
First, copy your music over and format the drive, using right-click in Windows Explorer.
Unplug your player and in (the m240) go to settings>enable advanced>usb>enable MSC
Doing these steps will clear out any problem files and the MSC option will make the player display
as a drive in Windows Explorer.
Copy your music to the newly displayed audible folder.
Thats it, it should update the list.
The usb auto detect is the problem, its great if you are using the Sansa software, but for the rest of us, MSC is the best way to use management programs.

  • You can Edit the Tags easly in Advanced Summery tab in the properties dialog in windows explorer
  • If you had edited the tags in any software, Select all the mp3 in windows explorer (you can select all at once by searching *.mp3 in windows search) and right click and select Properties.Goto summery tab and select advanced option and just click Apply button. If apply button is not active click in ant attributes above like Title,Artist or Length, make sure you dont edit it oK,,,
  • Now the problen is fixed
  • You can add same tag data to more files by selecting those files and enter the tag in the properties dialog..It applies to all.......

The id3-tag can only read by the m240 when the bitrate ist 128kbits. I tried it... My m240 can read all ID3-tags!!! Try ist... With CDex (Free) you can klick on and then on an then the mp3s youhave chosen were converted with a bitrat of 128kbit... Very easy... try it malle

    K, I just have used the ID3-Tag Version 1.0(With a Tag editor) and a bitrate of 128kbits. Now the m240 can read all my ID3-Tags...

    I used Tag Version 1.0 and erase all other Versions like Version 2.3 or 2.4!!!

    I thought about it and I wanna ask you something:
    Are you shure, that you picked the right files?
    The revonverted files frem CDex where in C:\Documents and Settings\your name\My Documents\My Music\MP3

    CDex didn't erase the old files. It creates new files in a new folder.(You can change the folder in the settings)

I am having this same problem and cannot find a solution either. I thought it might of been the method in which I was coping the music over so I tried doing the sync with Windows Media Player. No change. According to the factory literature it supports both V1 and V3 of ID3. Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

    Every mp3 I tried to load was over 128kps. However, even after converting them with the software you mentioned to 128kbs it still does not work.

    FWIW, I'm loading these to the player using the syn tool of Windows Media Player.

    Yes, actually I did catch that they were by default stored in a different location. I have been in email contact with Sandisk's tech support. They had me check the files id tags both in Windows Explorer and through Media Player. The last coorispondence was for me to format the device using Windows Explorer, update the firmware, then remove the battery for 30 secs. The format went as expected but the firmware did not. It is stating that the firmware on my device is version 3.2.8A while the one on thier site is 3.0.6A. It will not let me downgrade the firmware.

    They are now recommending me to return it but I feel thier has to be a way to force it to accept the older firmware.

Hi, the Sansa E260 is a portable MP3 player released by SanDisk in 2004. Several problems may cause the E260 to not function as intended from time to time. Common problems that occur are the device freezing, album art not appearing on the screen when a song is playing, pictures not filling the screen size and missing information on the separate tracks. You can troubleshoot the device and fix many of these common problems without the need of a service technician.

Reset
1. The Sansa E260 may freeze or function in other unexpected ways from time to time. This generally occurs when the unit's software has developed an error. Reset the device to clear the error and return the device to normal working operation. A unit reset is similar to rebooting your computer. You won't lose any data stored on your device.

To reset the E260, press and hold the "Power/Menu" button for about 15 seconds. The device will be forced to power down, during which the error will be cleared. You can restart the E260 as normal once the reset is complete.
Album Art Does Not Display
2. The E260 supports viewing album art on the display screen during the playing of a song. You may find that your album art is not showing up on the display when music is playing on the device. To fix this, make sure the associated album art file is in the same folder as the song being played. You will need to connect the E260 into your computer to move the album art files into the music folder.
Photos Aren't Full-Screen
3. Photos displayed on the E260 will not show up as full-screen shots if they are not cropped to the correct dimensions. The E260 software does not support stretching pictures to fit the full screen. To ensure your photographs will display on the full screen, crop the images to 128x64 in photo-editing software prior to transferring the image on the E260.
Unknown Artist or Album
4. The E260 displays information about each song using the ID3 tags associated with each track. ID3 tags hold information such as the artist name, album name, track number, year it was released and other information. If the E260 shows an artist or album as unknown, the information in the ID3 tag was not filled in. You can insert information into the ID3 tags from your computer.

To change the ID3 information, right-click on the music file and choose "Properties." Click on the "Summary" tab and choose "Advanced." The ID3 fields will display in the window. Insert any of the missing information and click "OK." When you upload the song onto your E260, the newly inserted information will show up in the display.

Hi there !!!

When you say every time you download some files and if it says UNKNOWN. Then i would say the ID3 TAGS could be an issue.
This issue occurs when information in a track's ID3 tag is missing or incorrect.
ID3 tags allows information such as the title, artist, album, track number, or other information about the file to be stored in the file itself.

In order to fix this up. Kindly follow any of these steps..

Step 1:

1. Open Windows Media Player.
2. Under Library, look for the file to be edited.
3. Right-click the file, then select Advanced Tag Editor.
4. Enter the proper data for the fields available (i.e., Title of the track, Artist Name, Album Name, Genre, Track number, etc.)
5. Click Apply then OK.

Step 2:

Using Windows Explorer
1. Look for the location of the file.
2. Right-click on the file, then select Properties.
3. Click the Summary tab.
4. Click the Advanced >> button.
5. Look for the information you want to edit under Property.
6. Click the space under Value to edit the information.
7. Click Apply then OK.

You check your songs from your computer first; Right click on one of songs, select Properties, select Summary tab (check Artist, Album Title, and Title). If they are there, you should update new firmware (search SANDISK FORUM from google). If they are empty, it's right for device display the filename.

E250 'unknown' problem
This player also has a known problem of occasionally losing the information for some songs. Random occurrence. It'll lose some of the ID3 tags of some songs.

"Unknown" listed in spots for songs in player's list of all songs
You need to fix the id3 tags of songs. Just follow below steps to do that. ID3 is a metadata container most used on audio format, which provides audio data standard for music files, including Title, Artist, Year, Genre and other great information. And all ID3 tags are supported by most player software, like iTunes, and Windows Media Player. On Windows 10, music files have included metadata information like song name, artist name, or genre, but there will be times when this data may show up wrong or appear missing for a song or an entire album.
To add tags to wav files, you can try Windows File Explorer.
1.Open the Windows File Explorer in your computer. (Windows key + E).
2.Browse the folder of the songs you want to add tags to wav files.
3.Right-click of the song, and then select "Properties".

4.Click to check the "Details" tab. It is well noted that all the details you see in the "Details" tab is part of the metadata information, and you can set wav ID3 tags by clicking the value field next to the property.

5.After updating the metadata information you like, click " Apply" and then "OK" button.
With Windows File Explorer, it will also improve your file search function and you do not have to set it to icon or details mode in order to change the sort settings and then switch it back to preview mode.

Insignia sport 4 gig wont organize by artist
You will need to right click on the song file to see if the ID3 information is present.

Right-click, Properties, Summary tab.

You shoudl see a list of fields that you can populate manually, or you can try loading your audio files into a media manger program like iTunes, Media Monkey, WMP, etc and insure your song titles and album names are correct in the ID3 tag fields. Then, your files will appear correctly on your player.

Unknown songs and artists
You will have to take them off the player,
rip your cd with media player, then BEFORE you sync them to the player, rightclick on the song, choose Advance Tag Editor and rename the song, artist, genre, then you can sync them over with title and name locked in the file.

Song is "Unknown"
If your using Windows XP right click on the MP3 and select properties. Then click on the Summary tab and select Advance. From here you will see a list of labels for your MP3 such as artist, title, year. album, genre and etc... When you edit it from here it should show on your Sansa. I hope this helps :-D!
