Digital TV can use component video and stereo connections to record on analog VCR. Analog VCR needs DTV converter to record digital TV channels. VCR play back use AV channel on TV.

SOURCE: Toshiba D-VR650KU vcr/dvd video recorder

I talked to some very nice people at tech support 1-866-583-7353 and found out that my satellite reciever must be set to 480i, which of course is a pain since like I wanted High Definition. The composite a/v cables (red, white, yellow) are not high def and are part of the reason. I have TiVo and when recording a movie from TiVo to the DVD it states there as well to set the reciever at 480i. Once I did this I was able to record from the Sat to the DVD. I did a quick review and I couldn't find a combo set or just a dvd recorder that has component video cable (red, blue, green) or HDMI inputs at all, I'm thinking that all would have to be recorded at 480i.

SOURCE: recording with comcast hd box and toshiba VCR/DVD

1st, see if you can get another cable box that offers component as well as RCA outputs on the back. Does your cable box have S Video out and does your toshiba have S Video in? If so, hook up the S Video from cable box to Toshiba. Then hook up R&W audio from Cable Box out to Toshiba In. Set the channel on the cable box to what you want to record. Set Toshiba to record channel 3 or 4, whichever your Toshiba is set on. The cable box controls the channel you are recording. You cannot set the recorder to the channel you want to record. It must be either 3 or 4. Try it. If everything else fails, you have to go cable from wall to cable in on cable box, cable out on cable box to cable in on Toshiba then either cable or RCA out on Toshiba to TV.

Can you be more specific? Is there anything on the display? Or is the red power light on or off? Some more detail is needed.

It seems to me that you have only got one set of RCA Cablec between the TV and VCR ( from VCR Video out to TV Video In), as such the VCR only works in playback mode, you need a second set of RCA cables (from TV Video Out to VCR Video In) then select the appropriate input (Video) for the VCR. make sure to follow the colour coding on the RCA plug / socket arrangement

Hookup

Out to tv connects to your input or where the antenna for the tv is located. If you have an antenna hooked to you tv, remove it and hook in the vcr. Then put the antenna to input on the vcr.

Recording from tv to vhs

I would have the antenna hooked up to the VCR. Then you could select any channel that you wish to record on the vcr without the tv being involved.

My Zenith VCR is not working with the digital converter box

When the VCR is "off" the converter signal should go right through the box, which you say it does. Then, when you turn the VCR "on" the picture disappears. That, so far, how it should be. To get your picture back while the VCR is "on" you must set the VCR to "receive" channel 3, and use your new converter box to change channels...accordianman

Tv/digital converter box & vcr-dvd hook-up

I have a vhs and dvd player all in one
I have a converter box hooked up to my tv and vcr , dvd player combined
I can play my movies on the tv. ok.
you have to have your tv and vcr set on channel 3. if that is what your main tv is set up with. Or 4 if you have your tv set up with that.
Mine plays ok. My settings are for channel 3
My suggestion would be to check your hook ups. maybe they are not hooked up correctly
I had to go to www.google.com and did searches to help with hook up.
I can also record station I am watching with vcr on vsh tapes. I do not have a dvd recorder.
I found out that you have to have 2 converter boxes hooked to one tv., in order to record on on station while watching another. I have not tried that, as I don't have 2 converter boxes for one tv. I found that by doing google search also. Good Luck

My new Toshiba DVD/VCR Combo has no built-in tuner

I'm not sure if you can do this using the timer recording, BUT....if you use the AV plugs (the ones with the red, white and yellow plugs) to connect the VCR to the TV, you can tape what is actually on the TV at that time.....you are using the TV tuner and just taping that on the VCR. As I said, I'm not sure if this works with timer recordings.....maybe if you leave the TV set on the proper channel? Try it and see if it works.

Toshiba Model: SD-V295 DVD/VCR Combo Setup for TV recording

The proper hookup is antenna or cable into the VCR RF/antenna input, then VCR RF/antenna output to the TV RF input. The hookup you describe means no signal is getting to the VCR.

With some TVs, there can be Video and audio output jacks which can be hooked to the video and audio jacks of the VCR. However this would likely mean you could only record the channel being watched, and, the TV would have to be on.
