I have been trying to connect the TV to an external sound card so that I can hear the TV via my surround sound system.
The TV only has a single 'digital audio out' socket, a headphone jack, and some red/white sockets that don't appear to be meant for connections with external sound cards.
The sound card is a creative labs, sound blaster x-Fi 5.1 external usb. My speakers are already connected to the card and the speakers work via the laptop.
I have already: plugged an RCA cable into the 'line in' on my sound card and connected the red/whites to a piece that consolidates them into a single male head - I then plugged that single male head into the 'digital audio out' and the headphone jack. It did not work.
No, that's not going to work. Digital output is just that....Digital. Your trying to send a digital into analog....won't work. Your tv don't have red and white audio out. That's what you hook to, but it still wouldn't be 5.1. Your out of luck my friend. The ONLY way you'll get 5.1 out of that T.V. is to get a 5.1 reciever with CO-AX digital input...the SAME as whats on your T.V. You can only hook-up sound to your X-FI with the line in jack using a y-connector and 1/8" stereo plug....and it won't ever be 5.1. It can't that way. Only way to get 5.1 to work on the blaster is with the tosh-link optical input cable. This too is digital, but uses optics to send it. Remember, you are playing with 2 different formats. Analog with your white/red thing you made and then digital. Digital using co-ax or optical tosh-link. Completely different.....as you now know.

Depends on your external sound system... If it supports HDMI, then just connect an HDMI lead between the TV and the external amp. If you don't have HDMI, look for two RCA/Phono connectors (small circular connectors) on the back of the TV (should be coloured red & white) and connect these to the external sound system. Finally, if you don't have either of these look for a 32 pin scart socket (rectangular with a bit sticking out) and get a scart to phone cable. Plug the scart plug into the TV and connect the Red & White output leads to your external system - hope that helps :-)
Apperently this tv has a history of sound board related problems. So if you are trying to connect external speakers because you have no sound from the set then you still will be sound-less. On the other habd if you just want more sound then I would suggest using a surround sound system which will readily connect to your set.
Hello Check the speakers first. Get this set connected to an external audio amplifier device, such ans an amplifier or so, with its audio out connections at the back of the TV with audio in connections on the back of the amp, and listen whether you can see sound from the external amp. If you can hear sound from the external amp, and not with the internal speakers of your tv, either the speakers may have damaged or it audio output IC had got damaged. if so you have to replace the IC or should replace the audio card o your tV, if the IC is not available at local electronic spare part market. If you can't hear any audio by external amp, as it has been connected as stated earlier, the mother board [main board] of your tv has the trouble. There is no repair to this digital board, and it should be replaced as card basis. OK.
This reson you are not hearing any "TV AUDIO" through your RCA surround system would be due to your tv sound output not being connected to an audio input into your surround system. You can hear DVDs,CDs and radio possibly mp3 if connected, as these are built in to the amplifier which the speakers connect to.
If the tv has a Line out (via phono plugs) and NOT via headphone out, connect it to an audio input on the RCA surround system. If the RCA has no other available inputs, well....there ain't a lot you can do but watch CSI with the sound from the TV and then Star Wars (for example) through the TV and Surround system.
Best Of Luck

1. are you using an external cable/satellite box. if the answer is yes , verify if you have the audio out of the reciver connected to a surround sound system If you do have it connected to a surround sound system , verify the surround sound systems volume is up and on the correct source input on the surround sound system
2. if you do not have a external cable/satellite box and and or your not using a surround sound system, and the cable line is connected directly to the television via a coax cable.. then verify that in the audio settings configuration of the telivision you have not accidentally disabled the internal speakers, some tvs have this option , please consult your manual.
a windows computer can only use one sound card for one function
you can use the internal sound card for output you can use the usb sound card for input / recording.
you can't use both for both.
Start -> control panel -> sounds and audio devices properties open up audio page
You can have one device selected on Sound playback You can have one device selected on Sound recording.
you can change which sound card is used for which function on this page. if you want to use the internal sound card set both settings to the internal if you want to use the external change both settings to the external.
