VR9, VR2 or VR15 may just be out of adjustment. This does assume you are transmitting signal and recieving.

It might not hurt to check with second SWR meter.

Depending on location, there is only a tiny possibility of residual capacitance causing this. However you might want to put a few neon bulbs around your base to monitor for stray RF. If there is stray RF, they will light up- no need to connect them to anything, you can tape them to convenient places you can see. If they do light up- check coax connectors- which you should really do as a routine anyway, and check coax for damage. Then add a flat braid strap ground to "earth bond" for the radio. Which you should have anyway,

Tuning/completetly aligned. would help the reception. Whether it would help the key up flickering is debatable, but with the added information, it seems most probable at this point the issue is minor and likely in the radio itself, perhaps little more than humidity in the relay, or lint- the contacts may be arcing on key up. I would double check the quench rectifier, should be D7 and also check D5, D6, R16 and Q2 as they are in the relay coil circuit.

Any decent shop should be able to handle the tune up. The bigger issue is the reception, but that may be influenced by where you have the predator set up and how it is pointing. and if the people in the shop know you, it helps a lot.

SOURCE: coax length

the shorter the better between radio and linear, all coax has to run in 3 ft, 18 foot is recommended for all antennas.

Antenna warning light

if you see the red light come on before you even set the swr you already have a problem.set the radio on cal and set the needle at the cal arrow.no unkey the mic . set the meter for swr and key it again.write this # down . go to ch 40 and do the same thing, then go to 19 and repeat. now that you have your readings you need to set the antenna. Now check it again for swr on 1-40-19keep doing this until you get an even reading on those channels.

Tunning the antenna on radio shack cb trc-447

After installing the antenna, follow these steps to adjust the
standing wave ratio(SWR).

2. Set S/RF/SWR/CAL to CAL.
3. Key the Mic and rotate SWR CAL so the meter points
to CAL.
4. Unkey Mic.
5. Set S/RF/SWR/CAL to SWR.

the SWR scale. Refer to the following table to interpret
the reading.

1:1 - 1.5 Great
1.5 - 2:1 OK
2:1 - 3:1 Not So Good
Higher than 3.1:1 Terrible

The ideal standing wave ratio (SWR) is 1:1, or a meter
reading of 1 on the SWR meter's top scale. A SWR ratio
of 1.5:1 to 2:1 is excellent for most mobile CB antenna
applications.

Check the SWR on Channel 1 and Channel 40
If the SWR is higher on 1, make the antenna longer
If the SWR is higher on 40, make the antenna shorter
Most antenna's are adjustable. Make small adjustments at a time.

Swr meter doesn't work. speaker pops

Replace the meter and speaker.

There is always a bump kind of noise when you unkey. If its popping, then the speaker is probably blown. Plug an external speaker into it and see if it is still a pop, instead of a bump.

Meters go. If tapping it while keying doesn't release it, then just replace it or just don't worry about it and get an external meter.
