How to a replace the motherboard on a Brother MFC-9440CN Laser Printer?

The unit has been diagnosed with a bad motherboard, since it no longer accepts input from the network (still functions fine as a copier/fax). I found a replacement motherboard for $50, but unless I can swap it out myself (not a techie), it makes little sense trying to repair this for the cost of a new multifunction printer. But I have $100 in consumables that I just bought for this one, so I'd prefer to fix this unit than junk it. Thanks.

I spend a few minutes on google and quickly found a place that provides service manuals for brother printers. I suggest you do some research like this on google and you tube and you will find your answer there.

SOURCE: How to check ink level on brother MFC-9440CN?

Hello,
Run the Brother Control Center. Click Device settings. Click where it says Inklevel.

A simpler way is Start-->All Programs-->Brother--> ...-->Status Monitor.
An icon will lodge itself on the tray (a printer). When icon is clicked on, the inklevels will show.

Hope it helps.

SOURCE: our Brother MFC 9440CN laser printer memory, keeps

When Fax Storage is set to On, copies of all received faxes are stored in the memory, thus using up a portion of the memory available for other functions.

The Fax Storage feature is utilized for Fax Forwarding, Fax Paging and Remote Retrieval. If you do not need these features, verify that Fax Storage is set to Off by doing the following:

  1. Press the Menu key on the control panel.
  2. Press the Up or Down Arrow key until Fax appears on the LCD. Then, press OK.
  3. Press the Up or Down Arrow key until Remote Fax Opt or Advanced Fax Operation appears and press OK.
  4. Press the Up or Down Arrow key until Fwd/Page/Store or Forward/Store appears and press OK.
  5. Press the Up or Down Arrow key until Off appears and press OK.
  6. If you have faxes stored in the memory, you will receive a message that reads Erase All Fax? 1. Yes 2. No.

If you want to erase all the faxes in the memory without printing them out, press 1 (Yes) and then press Stop/Exit.

SOURCE: I have a Brother MFC-9440CN Laser Printer -reinstall tray message

Rule out the software solution: is the document being printed of the same size of the paper in the tray? If not, you'll get a spurious tray error every time you print and then e.g. someone else prints another document with a different format. See Control Panel > Printers > Properties > Tray for this.

Then the hardware/firmware options: there could be either some dust or grit in the tray sensor, so that it doesn't "feel" the tray until it gets nudged, or the chassis (or maybe the tray) got slightly deformed and no longer properly activates the sensor. This is a white dot inside the tray slot on the bottom upper left; try blowing some compressed air on it. A McGyver solution to a warped chassis can be to apply adhesive tape on the facing part, so that it is thickened and improves contact with the sensor. Not really recommended of course, and the tape is bound to come off or wear out, and maybe jam the sensor even worse, sooner or later.

A replacement tray kit may cost anywhere from US$ 150 to US$ 300 depending on source.

Another possibility is that the tray counter has reached end-of-life. Press # 72 and check whether the page count is 288,888; in this case there's a firmware problem and I am not sure of the solution (it's known as the "Brother 288,888 page count problem"). This is unlikely - I don't know that firmware ever got in the 9440. But checking costs little.

I quote the reset procedure for end-of-life reset -- use wisely.

This function is provided for service personnel in order to reset the counter of each periodical replacement part and count the number of replacement times when replacing the periodical replacement parts.

Press 3 and 9 at the same time in the ready status on power on.

The “Reset Menu” will appear on the LCD. Choose applicable periodical replacement part with the arrows. Accept with OK. Press 1 to reset the counter, or 2 to quit without saving. STOP to exit menu.

WARNING: using the machine with an end-of-life'd component may damage the machine, not only that component.

Hope some of this helps. Let me know how it goes...

If you want to reset your Brother MFC 9440N machine so you no longer have the error message: Toner End of Life, do the following:

1. Open the front cover of the 7820N, that is, the cover that allows you to pull out the toner and drum, but don't pull out the drum/toner.
2. Push the button: Options (located on the left of the control pad).
3. Type: *00 on the keypad.

The Brother MFC 9440N should be reset and the Toner End of Life message should disappear. Warning, this may void your warranty and ultimately damage your machine if you are reusing or refilling your cartridges, but you should already know that. Hope this helps.

The most common remedy is to clean the drum unit, but you have replaced that. Try cleaning the corona wires, p144 here

Brother MFC 9440CN

You need to order the drum unit. It's different from the toners. You can replace it after the part comes in - you do not need a technicain to come in to do it for you. You can find the part from Amazon or Brother website.
