Hi there my laptop, wont play my cd, inthe dvd rom drive its a sony vgn-sz1xp, any ideas?

If the BIOS does not have the USB as one of the boot options then you cannot boot up with an USB memory stick.
In this case you need to replace the CD/DVD drive with a new one.

Does your OS detect the drive ? Does it read DVDs or nothing at all ? try removing it and reinstalling it or use an external USB CD-ROM drive in the meantime.

Put in an ordinary CD and play to notice if the CD is detected or is trying to read- you can hear spinning noise.If so but there is no files read then the possibility that the laser head can be defective or dirty.
It is ideal to clean manually the laser head eye using a cotton bud with gentle pressure on the lens eye.
If drive does not work try reinstalling the drivers.

If this wont work the drive can be faulty and needs a replacement.

that means the drive is dead :-(

CD/DVD Drive is missing from the Computer window and it's having an yellow exclamation mark in the Device Manager?


try these steps

Are you installing from the SONY-supplied "System Restore" CD/DVD disks, or from a "generic" Vista DVD-ROM?

The SONY disks _should_ have the correct drivers for your notebook computer.

You will need the drivers for the drive. When you look at the devices in device manager (devmgmt.msc) do you see any drives under DVD/CD-ROM drives?

Try installing a DVD rom. The sony unit installed in your laptop is a cd rom/burner. Cd roms will not play DVDs.

you need a DVD burner in it to play and Burn DVD's
you have a CD Rom in it now.
