Computer not recognizing my Maxtor hard drive

I have had no problems with my Maxtor 80GB hard drive but suddenly my computer no longer recognizes the drive.
When I click on 'My computer' it takes a long time for the drive icons to appear. The Maxtor light is flashing. When the icons finally appear, the Maxtor drive icon does not.
When I turn off the Maxtor drive, there is no problem with 'My Computer'.
The Maxtor drive is recognized in the 'removable disk' icon at the bottom of the screen. When I click on it, I get the message that it can't be removed as it is being used by another program.
Any suggestions?
Andrew

Andrew, That Maxtor drive sounds like it has finally died on you and being just an 80 gig drive means its really old. The systems failure to read the drive as your booting up is what's causing the long boot delay as the system will see the controller board of the drive, but your spindle motor on that drive is most likely dead and there fore you will not be able to access or read any of your data stored on that drive. Hope you had backups of important files.

SOURCE: My maxtor 200GB drive is not recognized by my CPU anymore!

I have had 2 Maxtor 3200's for a couple of years, and this seemed to happen periodically. After enough fiddling around and plugging and unplugging I've always managed to get both my PC's to recognize them eventually.

I have now started doing the opposite of what is recommended, namely, powering up the drive and then making the USB connection. Now I make the USB connection and then plug in the drive. This has worked reliably for at least 10 times.

SOURCE: I have a maxtor icon with a lock on it. I click on "unlock" and nothing works

Have you tried right clicking on the drive and going into properties. Click on security option and make sure that all the permissions for the drive are active with the exception of special permissions. Also look at the advanced security settings and make sure that you have full control permissions. Hope this helps.

If it fails to show up on another computer, it's dead. When you finish kicking yourself for failing to back it up, you can take it to a shop and ask them to pull the actual HDD out of the case and try to mount it with a different adapter. (This is more or less what ikkenom suggested, but your machine may not have the proper connectors.) If you're really lucky, they'll discover that the drive is readable, and they can transfer your files to a new HDD. You will then go home and BACK UP those files, right?

External HDD no longer recognized by new win7 PC

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked. I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

I have Windows XP with service pack 3. My system no longer recognizes the Maxtor 3200 external hard drive. Do I need to get an updated driver to the hard drive? When I first connected the Maxtor HD. ...

When you plug in via USB, does the USB recognize it and not display as HDD? If that is the case, then it's probably disabled somehow. Access Computer management, and check from there.

If that doesn't work, try on a different computer. If it doesn't work, your HDD has gone faulty. And if you recently changed your board, make sure you have a high speed USB port.

My computer no longer recognizes the Maxtor one

Windows may be recognizing the drive but not assigning a drive letter for some reason. you may need to go to disk management2_bing.gif and look for the drive there.

to do so go to control panel/administrative tools/computer management

once computer management is up find disk management, inside you will find all the drives that are connected to your computer, you should find your drive, If you do not then the drive may be bad or you are having usb issues.
If the drive is there but does not have a drive letter assigned to it, this may be because another drive has taken the letter normally assigned to it, you will need to right click on it and say "assign drive letter"

Let me know if this helps.

This could be an issue with the circuit board.I am facing a similar problem & shown it for repairing. And facing issue in sourcing the IC. Seagate is giving support for maxtor after it has taken over. Data recovery is possible only if the circuit is working.

Try connecting it to another computer.
If it is not detected, then either the disk-drive "inside" the unit is dead, or the "adapter" (USB-to-Disk-Drive) inside the unit is dead.

If the latter, disassemble the case, remove the disk-drive, and attach it as an "internal" hard-drive to your computer.
