I have a JVC GR-AX640U and is eating tapes in play and record modes.
I just bought camcorder off of e-bay. Camera works fine except for eatint tapes. I will try a cleaning, but if someone has the sam camea and problem
please let me know and how you fixed problem. One mor thing, when i first
put tape in and started to record it worked for 30 seconds at least. When
it stopped and i went to eject the tape was rapped around video head which
leads me to believe that it justs needs a cleaning. Anyway i will post if
cleaning works.
I posted the problem with the JVC GR-AX640U and found that one of the pinch rollers were broken. So i glued it back together and figured that solved the problem of it eating tapes, it has not solved the problem. It fixed the problem with the broken pinch roller but i will try the post that was posted about the problem. The capstan belt slipped from the motor, I don't see any belt but i have not yet took it back apart. I see alot of gear driven stuff.I posted the problem with the JVC GR-AX640U and found that one of the pinch rollers were broken. You are exactly right. I found the belt after i took the gear assembly off, it was laying there. I am in the process of taking camera apart and i'm half way there. Will keep posting as i go. This may help others that have thesame problem. I don't recomend this job to thenovice, it is very easy to break something. Most should take to a repair shop. I have experience in this field so it's easy for me. ThanksYou are exactly right. I found the belt after i took the gear assembly off, it was laying there. JVC camcorders are known for having safeguard problems. mine was locked into safeguard the second time i tried to use it at 1 month old. i had it repaired and it came back eating the tapes. eating the tapes was blamed on old, or improper tapes. they were all brand new never used JVC tapes. it came back from service locked in safeguard mode. i got it back the fourth time and it worked for a few days, then went back into safeguard mode. the shop had it more than i did during the first year. when it locked the next time after the warranty was out, i was told the estimate for repairs was $300.00. unless you want to try to risk taking it apart, the only 2 options you have is to send it in for repairs which is not cheap, or throw it away and never buy anything from JVC again. i chose option 2.
If you are referring to the JVC GR-DVL520, yes it does play Mini DV tapes, as well as records to them. It will not play Mini DV tapes that were recorded on an HDV camera. HDV is used by any Mini DV camera that records HD video.
You cannot play SVHS tapes on a standard VHS machine. Your solution is to either: 1. Buy an SVHS Home unit (not a great idea) 2. Use regular VHSC tapes in your camcorder (these will playback fine in your existing home unit). 3. Hook your camcorder directly into your TV and use the camera as a playback device.
unit need to be cleaned or have parts replaced if they got bad enough. only, only, only use the more expensive JVC tapes. They keep their tension far better than cheaper brands. Also, they won't rub off their oxide coatings on the heads as easily, avoiding the 'clogging' of the heads (which thereby requires constant cleaning-further damaging the heads).
Please try to buy a head cleaning tape and put in your camera and play for three times..Then record a cassette and play,if you are not getting the picture replace the drum assy and check.
