I bought this yesterday and it was working fine, but when i restarted my computer (it was still connected) it makes crackle noises! It stops after a while but whenever it uses any sound at all (even a windows 7 starting sound) it crackles for half a minute. And when I'm playing music, the quality is terrible because of it! The weird thing is, whenever i go into the recording sound screen and i haven't touched anything, it stops crackling. But as soon as i leave the window or go onto a different tab, crackling. I've tried disabling my microphone but still nothing. I've uninstalled it and re installed it and I've downloaded the Microsoft download for it and ran the setup. Still it crackles, i got this from **** Smith.

If you move the headset wire around ( with the headset around your neck so you can hear the noise but not be deafened by it) will it crackle? Those wires are very sensitive to pulling and easy to break a few strands inside the plastic jacket. If, for example, you stepped on the wire and pulled it from the laptop, you may have broken the strands inside the lead which would cause that problem. Also, that may have also bent the plug in receptacle inside the laptop which would make it lose contact and make that sound also. If possible, test the headset by plugging into a different laptop or portable cd player with the same type jack.turn on the test player and move the wire sharply, starting at the jack and flexing every inch down the wire to the headset. If this doesn't produce the problem, get some pc speakers ( you can pick some up for a couple dollars at a goodwill store or other second hand store) and plug them into the jack on the laptop.Play some sound ( music, video, etc.) on the laptop and see if ,when you move the jack around carefully in the plug, you reproduce that noise. One or the other of these tests should reproduce that noise and you will know what you need to do to get it fixed. If the problem is the plug in on the laptop, you may be able to open up the laptop and bend the tab inside that plug in port to correct the connection to the jack. If the problem lies in the headset, you will probably be better off replacing the headset.
Hope this helps and Thanks for using Fixya!!
