Dell XPS 420 with a ATI Radeon HD 4600 series video card. Using Vista 32 bit Connected to a Hisense HD TV via VGA cable. In display settings i select the tv as a second monitor - but the tv just says no signal and nothing changes. Then i notice the second monitor square has unchecked itself
The video card you used have a capability for dual monitor..so 1st thing that you need to do is to make sure that the computer recognized the 2nd monitor and activate dual monitor capability on the nvidia panel..after that on your tv select the proper source(like VGA, HDMI1 etc.) on which you'll be able to see the the video from the computer to your TV..

Hey! Nice Computer! ( At least while it was working! Specifications show some high-end hardware parts)
Steady amber light on the Power On light, means a bad power supply.
The Dell XPS 420 uses the standard ATX style of power supply found in 90% of computers out there.
(Personal computers. Not the Cray Supercomputers!)
This is Dell Support, and the User Manual - Removing and Replacing Parts - part of the manual,

From Me:
1) Computer unplugged from power, computer case open. TOUCH the metal frame BEFORE you reach inside.
Your body carries Static electricity.
Static will fry out computer hardware components.
You won't see it, or feel it.
Computer unplugged from power, you are safe.
Touch the metal frame Before reaching inside, your computer is safe.
Should you get up for any reason, walk away, then return, Touch the metal frame again)
You either have a 375 Watt, or a 425 Watt power supply.
I would recommend a power supply with more Wattage, and more Amp's on the 12 Volt power rail.
The Dell XPS 420 comes with an Intel Core2 Duo processor, or an Intel Core2 Extreme processor.
These puppy's can use a lot of power when gamin', or other intense programs are being used.
The Nvidia GeForce 8800 Series of graphics cards offered, use a lot of power when maxed out.
The motherboard with the Intel X38 motherboard chipset, uses a lot of power.
I would recommend a 600 watt power supply for a replacement.
My recommendation would be an OCZ StealthXStream 600W
Why?
1) If the temperature of this PSU is kept under 118 degrees Fahrenheit, the PSU can put out 728.8 Watts reliably. (47.9 degrees Celsuis)
2) It has Four - 12 Volt power rails.
EACH power rail can handle 18 Amps.
That's a total of 72 Amps!
3) It has all the power cables you'll need.
A) 20 + 4-pin ATX motherboard power cable
B) 8-pin 12 Volt power cable (8-pin EPS)
C) 4-pin ATX power cable
D) SATA power cables [ 3 ]
E) Peripheral power cables, (4-pin Molex) [ 6 ]
F) 6-pin PCI power cables. [ 2 ]

Check if the sound is available on your control panel >> Sounds
Check on the back of your computer if the speaker is connected on the right port (usually green hole)

You cannot use the VGA port, AND a graphics card. It is either use the graphics card, or use the Integrated Graphics of the computer.
(The VGA port on the motherboard is Integrated Graphics)
Three monitors?
Use two off of the graphics card.
Advise Do Not use a splitter, to run two monitors off of the DVI or VGA port of a Radeon 9250. You'll get low quality graphics. (In case you're thinking of running one monitor off of one port, and two monitors off of the other port)
If you want to run three monitors, I advise getting a computer, (Motherboard), that has two PCI Express x16 slots.
Depending on the graphics cards used, Nvidia or ATI, you will be using SLI, or CrossFire.
Going back to using dual monitors.
Do you know how to set up your Display Properties to use dual monitors?
If not, hit me up in a Comment.
