I have a Troy-bilt Chipper/Vac, about 20 years old. It has a Tecumseh 5 HP engine, self-propelled. It will start fine, but engine shuts down in about 1 minute. It will restart fine and shutdown the same way. Any ideas? Carb has been checked, new needle installed. Second, what is the governed engine speed setting? The manual only talks about 3,750 rpm (+/- 150) without the impeller installed.

there should be a set screw in the impeller holding it on the shaft.take the set screw out.then the impeller should come off.if it doesn't come off easily you need to heat the hub that the set screw was in.this expands the metal so that the impeller will come off..........there is no easy way to do this job........hope this helps, let me know..................

unscrew the nut on the bottom of the carburetor and remove the float bowl it must be emptied and cleaned , debree and water gets into the bowl and blocks of fuel flow reinstall the bowl and start, some carbs don't have a float bowl requiring you to remove the gas tank and carb which is a more involved cleaning.

Try going to searspartsdirect.com. You can put in the engine number 143.955016 in the model search and it should give you a parts list and diagram for that engine.
Good Day.
