HP C4180 says carriage jam but no jam and tried everything

I am getting a carriage jam error on a HP C4180 but no jam exists. I have tried things such as powering off and on the unit, looking for pyhsical jams, passing the carriage back and forth to see if passes OK without blockage, resetting the cartriages, checking the back and front panels to see for debris blockage, etc. Any clue?

Thanks

Uninstall your printer and then reinstall

This has got to be one of the Godd@mn dumbest answers I've ever seen.....How in God's good name did you ever become an "expert" here with mindless answers - the carriage in the printer is stuck, and your thoughtless answer was "uninstall and reinstall"?

"carriage jam. Open door. Clear carriage jam, then press okay" error keeps repeating... tried everything still no change...

If you are getting a 'carriage jam' error as soon as you turn on your printer with no tasks in progress, then check for any piece of paper stuck in the carriage. Remove the paper carefully. If the paper tears, part of it might remain inside the paper path and damage the product.

Follow the steps for fix HP Printer Carriage Jam

  • Turn off the printer and open it to see where the paper is stuck.
  • Manually move the carriage toward the opposite side.
  • Check the paper path and remove any piece of paper or any other object that is stuck in the path.
  • Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.

My hp photosmart printer is saying Error carriage jam, open dorr clear carriage jam and then press Ok to continue. Which door should I open and how do I clear the carriage jam? Linda

Without any paper in the machine I would try powering off and powering on. Lifting the scanner lid will clear so the carrige goes back to the correct side of the printer. Even rebooting the printer and loading the software will sometimes cause the carriage to go back to where it was supposed to be.

Clear carriage jam -hp d7460

Carriage jam usually comes from ink on the clear encoder strip that runs across behind the carriage. You need a damp Q-tip to clean from one end to the other, The other thing, on the HP is the cleaning station on the right gets gummed up with old ink and won't go toward the back fully, stopping the carriage.

Carriage jam message

I had this same problem and spend hours working on it. Took the side panels apart to get a better look. Nothing anyone said fixed the issue. Not even the link everyone keeps posting to HP's carriage jam fix. Was out of solutions and about to give up and order a new printer. There was one last thing I had to try that I didn't think was going to work, but I had a theory. Right after I tested this solution it started working again. This worked for me, but anyone who has tried every and have not got their printer to work can try it.

My Solution: Open the front covers and look inside. Just above the metal rail that the carriage travels on there is a thin plastic strip about 1/4 in. width and should have a glossy shine to it. I believe this is some kind of positioner. It runs through the carriage and gives it some kind of position. After years of use, it'll become dirty with ink. I used some tissue and alcohol and wiped the strip clean. It worked perfectly fine right after. Below is a picture of the strip I underlined with a yellow line.

you can call HP technical service which is open 24 * 7 and the phone number is 1 800 474 6836 for US customers.
Customers of other countries can open the following link: http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/wwcontact_us.html

There is a high chance of the printer hardware failure. If the printer is under warranty, HP will replace the printer for you.

Also make sure you should Unplug the power cord when there is
still power in the unit, take out both the ink cartridges and apply little more pressure and move the carriage too and fro untill you feel it is moving freely (Dont worry it wil not break)
