I added two 1GB memory sticks to the two existing 512MB sticks. I put the two 512 sticks in slots 1 and 2 and the two new 1GB sticks in slots 3 and 4. Bios shows all four sticks with their correct sizes. I can boot up Windows XP but it still says I have only 1024MB of memory. How can I get it to recognize the additional memory?

my guess is your windows XP virus magnet is stuffed
XP is a dead OS, and has Zero support.

1: boot to a linux live CD or stick
if linux likes it , your XP is hosed, like all are now,hopeless.!
if linux does not like the mem. then you bought the wrong ram.
try to know that BIOS does not get the final call on good mem
all it does really is PnP the spid chip there asking what i is.
and then passes that INFO data to windows.
did you run BIOS memory test? it too is crude,
in the end only a running good windows proves any memory is good. for sure loading a huge photo shop say 5 times.
the new sticks must be 240 pin, DDR2 SDRAM

the Pentium D is old.
and many memory makers do not make ram to fit old CPUs.

at its clock rates (called speed)
do look on kingston .com first.
m7350 seem there oldest one. in this line of HP PC.

To Be pricise ...there is no hardware problem.
The problem can be two.
1.Your computer supports max of 1.5 GB RAM.....For this check with other vendors too.
2.You have to update your BIOS.

Depending on the cost of what RAM your system uses, it may be cheaper to buy 1 stick of 1 gb or go with 2 - 512's. Either way you will benefit from the increase. When buying RAM you should install a matched pair.
You can go to Crucial, Kingston or Corsair for a RAM configurator.

Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700,DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.

Well in a weird situation like the one you have, i suggest inserting one of them into the Memory Bank 2 slot. After that, start up your Computer and shut it down. If it says you have 1GB then that's good. After that, put the other one in the free slot and start it up. I hope i helped, i can't think of what else would work for that.
Worst Comes to worst, just get the one that seems weird replaced with a new one from Best Buy. They should do it free of charge.

On the motherboard illustration where it states DDR2 XMM1 (64 bit ,240-pin module), and DDR2 XMM2 (64 bit ,240-pin module), is where the two 1GB ram memory modules go.
On the motherboard photo, it is the two Blue in color ram memory slots.
The 512MB ram memory modules go into the Black ram memory slots.
[DDR2 XMM3, and DDR2 XMM4]
The Blue ram memory slots are one Channel. (Channel 1)
The Black ram memory slots are the second Channel.
(Channel 2)
You want to keep LIKE ram memory modules in the same Channel.

You need low density, unbuffered ram memory, DDR2 Sdram ram memory.

Don't try out any high performance ram memory is my recommendation, because the Voltage required by the ram memory, may not meet the factory default voltages that are preset in your computer.
