ok if its stand alone it depends what model you have but it may not have a cold start function
1996 is the beginning of odb II when all the manufacturers had to start calling things by the same names, more or less. the ecu became the pcm, powertrain control module. physically installing a new one in your sable is about as easy as you describe. i can give you the step by step. if it really is a new one, you should not have any problems. if you use one from a junkyard it might not go so smooth. i don't know when ford started using vin matching, but it can be nasty. ok, here's the procedure i found:
1.disconnect battery negative cable
2.remove cowl deflector
3.remove engine wiring harness ground cable from the dash panel
4.remove the pcm electrical connector
5.remove the mounting nuts
6.remove the pcm
and then to reinstall
1.install the pcm in the dash panel. tighten the nuts to 71-106 in-lbs
2.install the pcm electrical connector
3.connect the engine harness ground cable
4.connect the negative battery cable
hope that helps

SOURCE: i need a new front ecu do you know of any other
i think if u open it u p the chip is removable
SOURCE: Changed ECU three times with rebuilt ECU
some wranglers have security and if the wrong ecu is used it will cause a no start.
So if someone is condeming the ecu, then what system is not working.
If a component has a short in it and it takes out the ecu then if the problem is not found then every ecu you hook up will fail as soon as you turn the key on.
