Make sure all the guides and rollers that support the barrel are in the correct place and did not fall off or brcome displaced. You should be able to search for the schematic for your model.
the maytag has a bearing made if a cloth material that is at the front of the drum. when this wears down drum is grating off the metal drum support, hence the grinding sound. the bearing is fairly straight forward to replace.

Check for bones/glass/ceramic from chipped plates in the food chopper (for lack of a better term). You'll need to disassemble the entire lower arm unit.
