SOURCE: ice build up in back section of a Whirlpool no frost top freezer refrigerator 66"hx30"wx27"d

your sure the defrost cycle works? sounds to me its not. you need to remove the freezer back and check the defrost components. or put it in the defrost cycle and see if it is working. to get that much frost as you describe the dor would have to be left open. also check all door seals. let me know what you find and we can go from there

SOURCE: Which is better pulse defrost or adaptive defrost?

pulse and adaptive def actuall work in tandem with one another. what happens is the computer will put the refrig into a short def cycle and test how long it takes the termination switch to open this determines when it is time for the unit to go into a full term def the next time. adaptive defrost looks for the number of door openings and how long it takes for the def termination switch to open during a regular defrost. most units will go into def every -12 hours with adaptive if the conditions are right it can go as long as 2 or 3 days between def cycles. both systems are very relaible and trouble free. the pulse defrost is available on higer end electronic control refrig and is also adaptive defrost system as well. whirlpool also has adaptive defrost only available on their midline units as well as some higher end manual control units.\\

SOURCE: About every 2 months the defrost drain gets plugged

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help. Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the lower back of the freezer.
Take a bare copper wire and wrap it around a fin near the heater and put the other end a few inches down the drain. The heat convection may prevent it from freezing.

Why does the freezer work but the fridge does not cool down

You have a defrost, or air circulation problem. If there is ice on the inside of the freezer walls it is probably a defrost problem, provided the freezer fan motor is running. If it isn't running the fan motor is the problem. If the motor is running it is a defrost problem. Three things can cause a defrost problem, the defrost heater is bad, the defrost terminator is bad, or the defrost timer is bad. On the newer refrigerators the defrost is controlled by a control circuit board. If it is bad it can be expensive. If you have an older refrigerator, I recommend replacing the defrost timer, the defrost heater and defrost terminator. When one goes bad, it effects the stability for the other parts to function properly, so replacment of all is best.

My Frig is not getting cold. Everthing is working besides that.

Check the back wall of the freezer. If it is frosted then you fridge is not defrosting . Either the defrost timer heater or thermostat. If no frost make sure the fan in the freezer is running.

Refrigerator was not cold, now freezer is not working either

You hear a fan running - but do you hear the compressor motor running too ? Common problems are defrost timers and refrigerator being stuck into defrost - or control board problems or faulty thermostats - Those defrost timers tend to go bad more frequently on newer refrigerators compared to the older refrigerators !

Stuck in defrost mode after changing timer and thermostat

Amana adaptive defrost:

Press refrigerator light switch five times in six seconds to initiate defrost cycle. Pressing five more times within six seconds will cancel defrost and go straight into the run mode. Similar operation on both bottom mount and SxS refrigerators. After the defrost terminator/thermostat opens, six minutes of dwell time occurs before the compressor and condenser fan motor will operate. After defrost terminator/thermostat open, 10 minutes of dwell time occurs before the evaporator fan motor will operate.

Kenmore elite 596 73503201 no cooling in top compartment

if the freezer is getting cold the problem is due to the cold air from the freezer not getting into the refrigerator. There are several things that can cause this problem. The coils in the freezer icing up and not defrosting properly is one of the things that can cause the refrigerator not to get cold enough. Another problem is the fan that blows the cold air from the freezer compartment into the refrigerator, not working. When the compressor is running open the refrigerator's door and push the switch that makes the light go out. You should hear the fan blowing the cold air from the freezer into the refrigerator, when this switch is pushed in. If the fan is working then you will need to find what is blocking the air flow. Iced up coils are a common problem. The icing problem can be due to a defective defrost timer or something defective in the defrost circuit. Click here for more information. Check for these problems and let me know what you have found.
