I had same problem. Called Canon and found out A40 is not compatible with Vista so there is no driver. But you can download pics to your Vista by purchasing USB Memory Card Reader/Writer you can find at Walmart for about $12.00. You put your Flash card in device and has USB that plugs in computer for downloading pics.

Canon Powershot a40 driver for windows vista

If your camera is not relatively new and you're running Vista or Windows 7, your computer may have problems seeing it. Unfortunately, this can't be corrected because the drivers were not updated by Canon for your camera. But there exists a good, if not better alternative way to download your photos. Please don't take the following as a sales pitch as it's not, but please see this link, as it describes the use of an inexpensive external card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue.

I have lost the installation disc for my Canon Powershot A40 and the canon website says there isn't a driver for Windows Vista Home Edition. Do you know a solution to this?

Don't give up on your A40 just yet. I still have mine, and although it's only a 2MP camera, IMO the pictures that it can produce in auto mode are some of the best from Canon's line of cameras.
But unfortunately as you've discovered there is no driver for its use with Window's Vista. What this means is that you can't plug the camera directly into your computer to download pictures. But that may be a blessing in disguise as there is an alternative, much easier way, to download photos from digital cameras.
Most professional photographers utilize inexpensive external card readers to download their photos. There are several important reasons discussed in this blog article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue. If you do purchase one, make sure that it is stated CF card capable, and for use with Window's Vista.

Driver

Hi,

You can try the software from here.

Pick vista and then english.

According to Canon, Vista doesn't support this camera as it is old.

Need Driver

Hi, you have unfortunatly met the same fate as a lot of unsuspecting people. VISTA does not support most older plugin devices or earlier version soft ware. It is possible to run an old old program designed for WIN 3.1 but none of the later top line products. It is the same for Hardware. My advice is to locate a set of drivers for your new computer system that work with XP and delete VISTA then install XP. Regards mistyman
