If the carrier (print head) goes to the left when you turn the T/W on then try this.
Return to the L. margin, press mar rel key, backspace to the location that you want the margin, press L. mar key the wheel should spin and reset the margin.

    After thought;

    Put a little lube on the silver shaft that the carrier slides on (WD40 works well)

I do not have a manual for the IBM wheelwriter 3, but I need to know how to set margins for this typewriter. Each time I press return the left margin changes moves to the right. If I shut it off the margin...

The WW3 resets margins and tabs to default on every power up. If the margins change while you are typing then the silver shaft that nthe carrier slides on is probably gummy. A shot of WD40 on both sies of the shaft shouls free it up.
Go to lexmark.com, click on support you will find a downloadable manual there.

Carriage won't return all the way to the left- almost as if a left margin has been set. Help.

if margin clear doesn't work try putting some light weight oil on the rails the carriage rides on. turn unit off, oil it and move carriage back and forth by hand then turn it on and see if that fixes it.

Print head moves left and stays horrible noise

The problem is either something is interfering with the carrier movement OR the carrier homing sensor is broken/defective. First, turn off the power and manually move the carrier to the right side frame, check for foreign objects in the machine (pens, pushpins, paper clips etc.). Put some oil (10 weight) on a cloth and clean the chrome shaft that the carrier travels on.(by the rubber cogged belt). This is a common problem. If the sensor itself is the problem, take to a repair shop.(not common)

When typing, left margin resets itself at the right margin.

The silver shaft that the carrier rides on is probably gummy put some light oil on it and move it back and forth.
