SOURCE: Power shuts off on my dyson dc17 animal

My DC 17 Animal would only work when the brush was in the down position & the hose attachment wouldn't work at all. There was no suction. We had to take it in to be serviced & discovered that there is another filter in the system that Dyson doesn't tell you about. The person at the service center said he sees this problem a lot with this model because there is nothing about it in Dyson's consumer documentation.

SOURCE: How to replace belt on Dyson DC17

Preface: Dyson folks were great, answer so simple I was embarassed after I called. 5 minute fix.
1. Loosen 3 screws from bottom plate using flathead screwdriver or coin edge and remove it.
2. Wiggle roller until it pulls straight out.
3. Squeeze new belt and loop it over metal drive gear (you'll easily see the gear).
4. Keeping belt on gear, insert edge of roller through belt and rotate the roller while pushing it through belt until it is inside the belt, then continue rotating roller and sliding it over until belt is in position over gears on roller.
5. Insert roller into slots on that it came out of, reattach bottom cover and its done.

SOURCE: Cannot reinstall valve pipe assembly on Dyson dc17 vacuum

Take off the cyclone canister and flip open the filter cover. (The U-shaped tube at the bottom of the vacuum is probably already off-if not, release the lock with a screwdriver and remove it.) Release the vacuum from the upright positon, so that the head is extended. Align the value pipe assembly so that the clear tabs line up while the small extension off the value pipe faces the front of the vacuum (ie, is near the filter area). Now you have to carefully twist the value pipe clockwise while lining us the small extension with the black groove inside the head piece by moving the head back into the upright positon at the same time. Replace the U-shaped tube.

SOURCE: Dyson DC17 - the vacuum shuts off automatically

I had the same issue. Got on the phone with Dyson. THe vacuum has a safety feature where if the motor gets too hot it cuts off. You have to leave it for 45 minutes or so and then it will work again. There is an underlying issue though. My problem was the black gasket thats in the debris bin shifted, probably from when emptying i pushed it on something. The black gasket should actually hang off the bottom like a skirt and the 2 groves should fit in on the groves of the gray mechanism. This seal is what provides 100% suction. Because of this..my vaccumm has been accumulating pet hair by the belt which i hear alot of people talking about and especially in the filter area. This is because I broke the seal by not having the gasket in place properly and it wasnt sucking 100%. They are sending me a complete new cyclone unit which has the debris catcher as well as she said its probably so caked up with debris it will never work again 100%. no questions asked they are sending it to me free of charge.

So if you remove the clear cyclinder debris catch thing all you will have is the purple cyclone on top and on the bottom is the black rubber gasket....if that shifted and is no longer hanging off...call dyson cause your vacuum is probably caked up...it will never work properly...they will send you a new part

I have a dyson dc17 animal. When you put the handle down, it is very loud

Hi there,

When you lower your DC17's handle into the vacuuming position, a second motor which powers the brushbar will switch on, which will make the machine sound a little louder than when it's standing upright.

However, if you're concerned that the noise the cleaner is making is unusually loud, I'd encourage you to get in touch with us directly - we'll be able to run through some troubleshooting checks over the phone to help resolve this.

You can reach us on 1-866-693-9766 - or if you email your contact details to [email protected], someone will be in touch as soon as possible to provide assistance.

Best wishes,

Jack

Dyson animal 17 the floor part works but when you stand upright to use hose is shuts off?

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty with your DC17. If the machine shuts off when standing in the upright position, it may be overheating due to a blockage in the wand, hose or U-bend. The easiest way to check for and remove any blockages is to follow the steps shown in our online support guide:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=954&product=DC17-ANIMAL

It's also a good idea to give the filter a wash - in normal use this should be done at least once every 3-6 months, as shown in the video below. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 24 hours for it to dry completely before replacing it.

This should resolve the issue, but for any further assistance please call us free on 1-866-693-9766 or email us at [email protected]

Best wishes,

Jack

My brushes are not revolving but air is moving dust in vacum. what is wrong. the belt is in place. Thank you Gloria

Hi Gloria,

Sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC17. Your cleaner is equipped with a safety device which shuts off the brushbar if it gets tangled with a rug fringe, shoelace etc. After making sure the brushbar is free of threads, hair or other obstructions, you'll be able to reset the cleaner and get the brushbar running again. The easiest way to do this is to follow the steps shown in our guide:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=956&product=DC17-ANIMAL

Please note, the brushbar will never rotate when the cleaner is standing in the upright position, or if you've turned it off using the silver switch next to the red on/off switch.

Hopefully this should resolve your issue. However, if you've run through these steps and are still concerned, it's probably best if you get in touch with us directly. One of our experts will be happy to run through some troubleshooting over the phone with you and provide the assistance you need. You can call us free on 1866MYDYSON - or if you email your details to [email protected], someone will be in contact as soon as possible.

Kind regards,

Jack

When I tilt my Dyson DC 17 Animal upright so that I can use the hose, the vacuum powers off. As soon as I tilt it back down, it turns back on.

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC17. When you stand the cleaner upright, the brushbar motor is designed to shut off automatically. However, the suction motor should continue to run unless you turn it off manually with the on/off switch. If both motors seem to be shutting off when you stand the cleaner upright, it's probably best if you get in touch with us directly so we can resolve this issue for you as quickly as possible.

You can call us free on 1866MYDYSON - or if you email your details to [email protected], someone will be in contact as soon as possible.

Kind regards,

Jack
