Model 718. Why is CW mode kaput?

There are a few possible reasons why your radio might not be transmitting in CW mode. One possibility is that the keyer chip has gone bad. Another possibility is that there is a problem with the power supply. If you have a multimeter, you can check the voltages to see if they are within specification. Finally, it's also possible that there is something wrong with the antenna connection. Make sure that everything is securely connected and that there are no loose wires. I hope this helps!

Why does the unit does not seam to work on SSB?

Since everything else works then is it USB or LSB or both? Did you check the power output when your in SSB and if there isn't any you can expect the drive transistors. Try putting the radio into the RTTY or CW mode and see if there is any power output when you key the mike PTT.

Have you tried turning the mic gain up,and not knowing Texas star model numbers,is it a mobile linear,if so,do you have a sufficient power supply?Just some thoughts off top of my head.

Symptom:Buzzing or motorboating sound in either the transmit or receive.
Problem: TR602 is oscillating
Cure: Replace C602 with a .01uF cap {Cap is located in the power supply board}.
RG 66,99,DX2517 Replace Q54 2SB754 60watt 7A with a higher power 2SB817 100 Watt 12A. Derating of this component will cool operation, provide better voltage stability,decrease wobble, allow voltage increase to 14.5 volts comfortably. (replace 10 volt caps in this section of the radio to a minimum of 16 volts before increasing supply voltage to this level)and provide faster swing rise time, Replace Q37 2SA473 to a 2SA1012-0 or ECG153 this will improve the clarity and volume of the modulation and it will also run a lot cooler.

I have a FT-8900 and want to be able to open the AM side so I can use it on frequency 26.805 is there anyway it can be done

The Yaesu FT-8900 is a quad band FM transceiver only. It can not be modified to receive or transmit AM, SSB, RTTY or CW. It works on all or portions of 70 centimeter, 2 meter, 6 meter and 10 meter bands. The 26.805 Mhz frequency is 11 meters, so it is out of range of the 10 meter band in the radio, it is close. Even if able expand the transceiver, the AM / SSB mode commonly found in this band makes it impossible to use. Further, the radio is not FCC Type Accepted for use in this band.

SSB radio

If you are using the radio on a boat, then no, the grounding does not matter that much. However, an SSB transceiver would be hassle to install on a boat because of the amount of power they use to transmit. If the transmission is bad, try using the radio's internal tuner instead of the separate tuner. This may help improve the quality of transmit, however, some radios have a tough time clarifying incoming and outgoing signals and create a garbled sound when it receives a signal or when it transmits. If that doesn't work, then you can try grounding. But if you want a radio that doesn't require all this nonsense tning, you might want to think about investing in a Yaesu. They are pricey, but are one of the best HAM radios.
