I had one of those moments that "seemed like a good idea at the time." I needed a timer in the kitchen so I thought I know I will use the one of the Microwave but I didn't but anything in it turned on the microwave (not the timer on the microwave for 20 min.) then there was a "pop" sound and the unit went dead. The fuse in the house fuse box is on and there is still power going to the unit but nothing on the screen and nothing will work. Any ideas???
The pop was probably the high voltage rectifier diode blowing.
Also, what usually happens when a microwave is run empty is that the magnetron overheats and the thermostat opens and kills power to the unit until it cools back down, then the microwave comes back on in the off condition, ready for you to set the clock.
I would suspect you need to replace the diode and the thermostat, then once it powers up you can test to see if the magnetron still works.
If you or someone you know
decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and
disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.
There
should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the
control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is
very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.
You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.
You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here. Those are very handy if you have to remove it from the wall to replace the magnetron should it be bad, too.
