Cannot find my charger for my Peg Perego 12v battery. Is there another way to charge it besides buying another charger?

  • escape2mtns Jan 25, 2009

We just got a new battery from Walmart and I plugged it in. I didn't look at the LED on the Perego charger until about an hour later but it's already green. Will it hurt to leave the battery charging for 24 hours?

According to Manual, before using a new battery, it must be charged for 14 to 18 hours.

Although what the previous post is correct, if the battery is new, and if you have the peg perego charger, you need to charge it 36 hrs the first time. After that, you can charge overnight. The peg perego charger has a small light on the front. When you plug the battery in the plugged up charger, it will show amber. When battery is charged it will show green. Don't leave it plugged up, after the first charge, longer than 24 hours.

If this is not a sealed battery, go to an auto parts store and ask for a battery checker, (technically it's called a hydrometer) and measures the specific gravity of the electrolyte(the liquid) in the battery.
This is really the only true test of the condition of a liguid battery. Remove the caps on the battery and draw up some of the liquid into the hydrometer. The pointer should be in the green. All 6 cells should read about the same. if the radings are lower, charge the battery at a low amperage say about 2 amps) for at least 24 hours. and then read the hydrometer again. If the readings are not in the green, the battery needs to be replaced.

How long do i charge a 12v peg perego battery for the first time?

a good rule of thumb is to charge it one hour for each amp hour the battery is, so if its a 12v8ah battery charge it for 8 hours, if its a 12v10ah battery charge it for 10 hours, and so on
