I am asking again for help finding a cut off switch for my McColluch electric chipper/shredder. I am hoping someone has one laying around?!

My brother-in-law is developmentally disabled. He seems fond of using the chipper. I would not feel comfortable letting him operate the machine without this safety feature.

SOURCE: Chippers and Shredders safety tips

Make sure that the machine has come to a complete stop before removing access panels. When performing maintenance on the machine, shut off the engine, remove the key (if electric start) or temporarily disable the machine. Always feed material butt-end first. Feed shorter material into the machine by laying it on top of longer material. Do not feed material that you've raked up or scraped off the ground. You should simply place this material on top of the material that you've already chipped, as it may contain dirt and rocks that may damage the chipper. Chippers with dull knives and anvils do not feed well. This becomes a problem with any machine but especially on manual-feed units. If your operator then tries to force the material into the feed shoot, he or she creates a greater danger of slipping and getting too close to the chipper knives. Do not operate the chipper alone. Always be prepared for a fire or injury by having a fire extinguisher attached to the machine and a first-aid kit handy. It is the operator's responsibility to make sure that flying chips and debris will not harm bystanders.

SOURCE: Troy-bilt Model 47279

I really hate to be the "bearer of bad tidings" but Troy Bilt, as a company, in no longer in business, MTD bought out the name and design rights for a lot of their tools but they are not manufacturing or stocking any parts for the older GardenWay/ Troy-Bilt machinees. My best suggestion would be tostart looking for a good used one or one with a blown engine, broken frame or whatever, buy it and canibalize it for spare parts

SOURCE: I have a yard machinne 6.5hp chipper/shredder -

The blade(s) should have usually two bolts on them depending how many blades you have. Mine only has one blade held on with two bolts and that is only on the side that cuts the larger branches up to two inches in diameter and should be sharpened on a grinding wheel because it has a specific angle to it. The other side that chips smaller branches and twigs it a type of flailer, meaning pieces of metal just swinging around to mash up the sticks and do not need sharpening.

SOURCE: replace flails on 5.5 Yard Machine

Go to www.ordertree.com. The flailblade is p/n 719-0329, The shredder blade is p/n 942-0571, The chipper blade is p/n 981-0490.
Replace them you have to take casing off the unit to get to them.

What are the major differences between an electrical shredder and a gas shredder?

Electrical shredders are generally cheaper, smaller and lighter; however the cable length can be limiting and the quality of the shredded material sometimes does not turn out so good. Gas shredders allow you to move around your yard freely without restriction and tend to be more powerful. On the down side, they will need more maintenance, in the form of refueling.

I plug my shredder in and turn it on, it makes a short hum noise and then breaker trips and I cannot reset it.When it does reset it trips again Never used it

The breaker is tripping on an over current condition. This could be caused by the motor being stuck and not moving or some sort of short circuit. I suggest, with it unplugged, that you find a way to rotate the chipper head or the motor. May have to disassemble to accomplish this. If it will not turn it may be bound up and you are going to have to take apart anyway to remove the item.

Good luck, hope this helps.

Need Discharge Screen for my Troy-Bilt Supper Tomahawk 8HP chipper/shredder Model #11087 and Part # W20501075 purchased 3-1988 from Garden Way Inc. Thanks for your help

This will take a little research but do a search for "mower forums" on Google, Bing or Yahoo. Ask your question over there and you just may find someone with one to sell.
Two other places to try. First, do a "saved search" on eBay and wait for one to come up. Or, go to eBay and search for Troy Bilt Chipper parts (or shredder) Look at the sellers and you will find some sellers who sell a lot of parts. Ask them if they would know where to find your part.
Second, on Craigslist post what you are looking for in the "items wanted" section.

I need a parts and owners manuel for a Super Tomahak Wood chipper made by Garden Way Mfg. Co. where do I go to get one?

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly.

Go to this site:

http://www.brentchalmers.com/

I note your looking for the Super Tomahawk. If you can come up with a model number I think I can find your parts manual for sure. (or at least an on-line parts list.) Also.... If you can come up with an engine number like OH120 or L90 off of the engine I can find you a manual for the engine also.

This is the list of Manuals available there:

  • 1983 W-W Grinder Inc. Manual and Parts List Super Tomahawk 5-8-2G/C and Tomahawk 5-8-2G/M Chipper/Shredder (40 Pages)
  • 1989 Troy-Bilt Owner/Operator Manual Junior Tomahawk Chipper/Shredder (24 Pages)
  • 1989 Troy-Bilt Technical Manual 4HP, 5HP, & 8HP Models Tomahawk Chipper/Shredder (12 Pages)

  • 1993 Troy-Bilt Parts Catalog 47265, 47266, 47267, 47276 Tomahawk Chipper/Shredder (16 Pages)
  • 1994 Troy-Bilt PTO Chipper/Shredder Owners Dog Clutch Kit 1902404 (1 Page)

  • Hopefully your model is one of the above.

Here is link to the Parts manuals:

    http://www.partsandservice.com/html/TroyBilt/cs/

There are 90 parts manuals there.

Again with a good model and engine number I can probably come up with your exact manuals.

    Thanks for chosing FixYa,

    Kelly
