I open the printer took out the tray with the toners and there is yellow dust all over the place. including on the belt below the toners. what do i do? If i replace the yellow one would that help?

More than likely it is drum, pull it out and see if marks are on it's surface, dont touch drum surface, normal user replacable part, can also be the fuser at rear thats a job for a tec

There is a gear on the left hand side of the toner to reset the toner count this can cheated be rewinding it. Yes the design is to stop the refillers or at least slow them down a bit. If this fails purchase a new genuine toner but I have seen problems with the switch that resets the toner (Either the spring on the switch has popped off or the main board has failed).

You have a one year warranty with Brother if you need repair. You might shake the toner, or put a small electrical tape over the little round windows on the toner cart. to use the rest of the toner, and press the go button 3 times to print the report that tells you how many prints you've made, you could just be out of toner again...
