Vsmile learning shuts off when game inserted

Shuts off when game inserted

It still works when turned on and no game inserted...you know, the little character that bounces up and says "V.smile!". Other than that, every time I plug in ANY cartridge, it shuts off or screen stays blank OR screen splits to two different colors: red and black, green and black, or orange and black....NO idea whats going on, but extremely frustrating!!!

I have same problem, just bought a new AC Adaptor yesterday and the problem still occurs when that is plugged in.

system turns off when games inserted

  • burrell49 Nov 24, 2008

Same EXACT problem as the post on 10-20-08. We have about 6 different games and none work. This unit has only had light use...probably about 4 hrs. of total use. Very frustrating. When turned on w/o a game we get the startup screen but putting a cartridge in makes it go black.

i will join the club on this one. i get power with one game and then change games i lose power and mix and match. some times it works and most of the time it dosent. seems to be some sort of power problem????? i am Puzzled.

  • mom09 Jan 04, 2009

Just curious if anyone's problem was solved with the solution below. I've tried it and am not having any luck. Before I tried the reset switch, the screen went black, now the screen is split. The on/off buttons don't respond either. If the "On" button is lit up, it won't turn off without unplugging it.

  • liat2768 Jan 05, 2009

same problem - insert the cartridge and it turns off. Tried the reset button, cleaned with pressurised air and am seriously considering opening up the darned thing!

As soon as I plug the cartridges in, the power turns off. I have tried the reset and the power hold but still nothing,.Very frustrating as we have used this maybe 4 hours in the last year!

I have the exact same problem as everyone else! If so many people are having this problem why isn't v-tech doing something about it????

I have experienced the same shutdown problem, and solved it in 10 minutes with the following procedure:
1) Clean the cartridge and system components with rubbing alcohol...2) Take out the batteries...3) Hold the on/restart button for anywhere from 10-45 seconds...4) Put batteries back in and put a game in...5) Power it up...

In some cases (like mine) it is due to a dry solder contact holding the cartridge slot to the board. Some games work when they are positioned a certain way in the slot (notice you can move the cartridge back and forth slightly when it is inserted). Yes, cleaning the cartridge contacts can help as a process of elimination, but the continued forcing of games into the system over time will eventually lead to this issue. It can be fixed if you have a little electrical knowledge and a heat gun or soldering iron.

Make sure the system is turned off before inserting the cartridge.

1) Press the Reset – Press and hold the ON button for about 10 seconds
2) Make sure the game is inserted far enough into the system, and that it is pointing in the right direction. You may occasionally need to clean the contacts.
3) Also, make sure you are using the supplied power cord/adapter, not batteries. Batteries cause more problems than they’re worth.

Yeah, just cleaning the contacts on the game cartridges with alcohol did the trick for me. I also did the trick with removing the batteries and holding down the power button for 45 seconds but I am not sure if that did anything.

you have to do this in the right order or it doesn't work. Start with the TV and Vsmile OFF
step 1) put the cartridge in and make sure it is all the way in
step 2) turn the TV on
step 3) turn the Vsmile on
if it still doesn't work, unplug the adapter or take the batteries out and let the system clear and then do the steps over. Good luck!

Vsmile shuts down when cartridge inserted

Remove all Smartridges, controllers, adapter or batteries.
Examine the Smartridge slot for loose objects, Blow into it to
remove dust or debris.
Pull back the plastic sleeve on the Smartridge and clean both sides
of the metal contact with alcohol and a cotton swab.
Insert the Smartridge into the Smartridge slot and remove quickly twice without turning on the V.Smile unit.

This should fix the problem.

I just purchased an adaptor for the vsmile learning system, so we didn't have to use batteries. I followed instructions on how to plug it in correctly, but when I plugged the ac adaptor to the vsmile, it...

You have to take out the Batteries.
also, the connector on this adaptor is incorrect for some Vsmile consoles. (most that are about 5 years old now).
Make sure you are using the right plug, and it is inserted fully into the console with no batteries. Then, it should work.

Vsmile game unit

Try cleaning the contacts on the games. Push back the sleeve on the game and clean good with alcohol. If this doesn't do it, unplug it, and clean the contacts inside the unit with a qtip.

Hope this helps!
