My Aiptek camcorder won't record audio with an external mic plugged in. The appropriate icon shows up on the screen when I plug it in, so the camera is recognizing the mic, but it won't record the audio. I've tried a second mic, same problem. I tested the two mics on another device and both worked fine. The internal mic works fine.

You cannot simply attach a mike with a 3.5mm jackplug by using an XLR adaptor, the connections are all wrong. The only way to connect an XLR mike to the XM2 is by using an adaptor like the Beachtek XLR adaptor which is a superb bit of kit. I can't be certain of your problem but may I suggest possibilities? I wonder if the adaptor you bought was a stereo adaptor. If it looks like a larger version of the original plug then fine, if it has only the one long metal contact along the pin and then the tip separately, it is a mono adaptor. Using this on a stereo mike would work but it would be combining both channels into one which would degrade the sound and could give rise to your noise issues. If you have got an adaptor that is stereo, is it just the push in type? You can get adaptors that have a threaded barrel to screw the adaptor to the normal plug to lock them together tightly. If it hasn't got that, I would try putting the adaptor on the mike's 3.5mm plug and then taping it together to hold them very tightly together. This will stop minute movements between the two causing buzzing and other noises. I hope you find that of some help, my apologies if not. Rob

You are not doing anything wrong. For some reason, Aiptek doesn't give you this option on the camera. You have to insert you SD card into a reader and delete it that way. Ya, I know, doesn't make sense. Also, a feature I hate is it does place your videos into one continuous file. Only video clips, so each time you stop then start recording, it creates a new file. Anyway, I've had my Aiptek since 10/2008 and no problems so far. Great indoor videos. Not too crazy about the still pictures though.

Most mics will work if the plug fits the socket on camera and it fits on the hot shoe okay, I never use Sony mics on my Sony camera, you end up paying for the name, not the item.

Sony does not currently make an input adapter for connecting external microphones to camcorders.
However, Sony manufactures a number of different external microphones for camcorder use that do not require an input adapter. Depending on your camcorder model, you may be able to find a compatible external microphone from the Sony® Parts and Accessories Sales Center or Sony Style Web site.
NOTE: Not all camcorders have an input jack or Active Interface Shoe for connecting an external microphone.
