Hissing sound for all modes

I know this receiver is old, but I've hardly used it and I've always loved it. After the unit sits for a long period of time (unplugged), it powers on and works brilliantly as long as it's on. But - if I turn it off for a moment, then turn it back on, I get this hissing sound in all modes, not matter which input I'm using. Any suggestions?

SOURCE: I have a Marantz SR5500 and the unit will not stay powered on.

I have this problem. it is caused by an o/c mains transformer primary winding. the clicking and flashing light is the stanbyy circuit trying to switch the power on to the main (large) transformer when it gets no voltage out it switches back off

I have exactly the same problem! Sometimes when I turn the input dial it comes back on but this time it is out for good. I have tried re-wiring and unplugging etc. nothing seems to work.

Distorts the sound when reading most of the time.

The Op Amp in the unit are oscillating if you hear hiss and if there is distortion they could be bad. This is a job for a Technician to check out.
Make sure you are NOT plugging in a CD player output into a Phone input on a receiver or amp. The CD is 1000 time too much voltage.

No sound after "recording" cassette

It obviously has a electronics problem that needs a Technician to work on it. The thing is people these days would rather throw items away than having them fixed- am I pod type mentality.
Combo units are not made to last very long as they are full of technology short cuts- they take a lot of time to fix.
If you want me to look at it, I am in the Chicago area.

L've always used my built in hard drive to save

it sounds like the harddrive has gone bad. You can always use a USB stick for a temp solution and try to clean the hard drive and see if you can transfer data over. There are also program and transfer cables for when you upgrade to a bigger hard drive. You may want to see if you can can try to pull some data from the old hard drive that way.

It sounds like somehow the pre-gain is very high while the volume or post-gain is very low. Try turning the volume high on the effects unit and the gain low, and don't have the amp volume too low either.

Hi! Transmitting doesn't mean it's working, What you should do to test it is use a good quality universal remote such as a Logitech Harmony and first program the preset code for your receiver into the Universal Remote. If that works, you know your OEM remote has gone bad, at least for those buttons. If it doesn't then you you should attempt to have your Universal Remote "learn" the IR signals from your receiver's remote If the controls still don't work, there is a problem with either your IR receiver on your receiver or the the circuitry that proceesses the signals into commands. Good Luck!

Static or hiss noise

I have the same problem. Only one speaker is hissing and only for analog sources. No hissing when I select Coax.
