Maytag Performa PAV2300AWW screaching noise, belt problem, pulley broke

I hate my washing machine. It is just a little over 2 years old. It has been making a severe screaching noise when in agitation and when spinning. Also when spin cycle begins, washer hums, doesn't spin and burning smell occurs. If you open lid and reclose, washer spins correctly, just noisy. I changed the belt (which was completely glazed from slipping) and everything seemed great with the new belt when I tested it. Washer was spinning correctly and noises went away. So, at that time, I began a load of laundry. Wash cycle went smoothly and when spin cycle began, heard a noise like the belt broke or spun off. After spending 30 minutes with a pitcher and carpet shampooer to empty all of the water out of drum, I tipped the washer over again to find that the plastic pulley on the motor was broken in half and belt was off. The pulley showed obvious belt burning marks from the old belt, so can you tell me if this is why the pulley broke? All other pulleys move freely, nothing is locked up and motor also moves freely. Please help before I either take a sledge hammer to it or throw it out my back door??????

We have a PAV3200AWW washing machine that started screeching while agitating and spinning. Soon after, the washer stopped, smells burnt, and will not empty or do anything.

I have Serial # 12277733YK Tag # 0325046349, Maytag Performance Washing Machine. When the machine is wasing and rinsing-the noise is terribly loud? Is there anything I can do to fix it or do I have to call in an expensive Maytag representative to fix it?

My Maytag Performa was making the loud squealing noise. I changed out the water pump/bearing, took care of the problem.
Putting a new belt on just help burn up the bearing (they needed replacing) and probably ruined the new belt. Probably seized the water pump bearing and the belt jumped and broke the motor pully. A washing machine motor is very strong, when that h20 pump bearing seized (or possibly some bearings jamed up) the motor kept on turning that belt and the plastic pully gave in. You'll need to replace that also. If the h20 pumb bearing is turning freely, likely the bearings jammed up but or now loose. That bearing should be tight, no slack or play in it. You can probably wobble the pully on it all around while turning it. The slightest slack is too much.

My wahing machine makes the noise that it normally makes when it's in spin mode, but the tub isn't moving.

The belt probably broke.  The belt is on the bottom of the machine and if fairly easy to replace.  If it is not the belt it could also be the brake, but if this was the case you would probably be smelling burning rubber during the spin cycle.  The brake is just above the belt pulley.

Maytag PAV2300AWW Washer makes grinding sound when agitating

Sounds like it is the bearing on the water pump. Take off back plate and replace and remove 3 screws and two hoses (the one hose is a waste line so make sure you have a bucket to empty our waste water) after removing these remove belt on bottom of pump.

Grinding during the wash cycle

I was told that it was the transmission - good luck with that....

Labor alone was $175 - I ended up trashing mine (3 1/2 years old) and buying a new one.

Just got off the phone with Maytag - by all means, try to get them to pay for stuff before you throw away the one that you have....Now that they know it's gone, I supposedly don't even have the right serial number...(it was hauled away 4 days ago by Lowe's)

How do you know if your belt is not functioning properly? During the wash and spin cycles the machine makes an outrageous noise. The washing machine is 7 years old, a Maytag Performa, Top Loader, Model #...

  • tilt the machine over and look at the bottom. the belt is there.
  • it will feel loose but that is normal. it is spring tensioned.
  • the noise is probably coming from the water pump, when they are bad they make a loud noise.
  •  turn the pulley around a couple times to see where the noise is coming from.

MayTag washing machine

Need a little more information. Is the belt still in tact ? Is it weaving through the pulleys ? If it it then you need to check the idler pulley to see if it is worn. If the belt is broke then there are several steps that must be taken.
