Archos 604 wifi.will only play a few seconds of some movies

screw that software. When you plug in the archos the archos asks what your doing with it. Say Hard drive mode and then you can drag and drop and file you want onto it.

Its pretty simple put movies in the movies folder and mp3s int he music folder lol.

When you are connected to a Windows® network, you can browse the shared folders of other computers in the network, using the Archos File Browser. From the Home Screen, select the Browser icon. Once in the browser, select ‘Network’. Your device will search for other computers in the Windows® network and you can start browsing their shared contents.

if you wouldnt mind losing data then i suppose you could format it and get rid of the firmware update and the put all your stuff back on. only a suggestion.

I dont like it to use Windows media player and to synchronise.
In Settings -> System you need to set USB on 'PC Hard Drive'
Then you can use My Computer to find the Movies, just copy and past them in Archos -> Video map. Notice that Archos can't play any movie, you need special extensions.
I kow 1 exension, I convert my movies always in that 1 so Archos can read the movie: AVI MPEG4
There are more, but I need to find out.
Anyway, good luck trying to 'install' video's on Archos and also watch them ;)

hi there once you conect your archos to the computer and you`ve opened your music file it`s just a case of drag n drop them into it(easy) as long as there mp3 format (if not but you can change your itune`s to convert them into mp3 format)as for films archos have some software you can buy to convert to the right format(i use :1 click dvd to divx avi :, :movie 2 mem card: . software) you can download it free from u torrent, your`ll have to read how to work it tho, and it couldbe a bit tricky for a tech idiot (as you put it) good luck.

why dont u try to upgrade the firmware?

Once you have downloaded the file to your PC simply connect your archos to your pc using USB cable provided, select PC hard drive mode, and simply copy or drag and drop from one destination to the other. Your Archos usually appears as J:Archos604WiFi if you have a built in card reader if not it may appear as an earlier letter in the alphabet.

Get an Apple Touch. I have the Archos 605 and it is terrible compared to the Touch.-Bob

I had the same issue.
The size of the AVI cannot exceed 1gb or the end of the movie will never play.

I had a movie that was 1,7gb. 2 hrs and 15 seconds.
The Archos recognized this as a 1.7gb file and 2:00:15 long.
As soon as the movie started, the time line bar at the bottom of the screen went from 2:00:15 to 1:10:25. Basically, it cut off the last 50 minutes of the movie.

I simply divide the movie into 1gb chunks.

I decrypt the DVD to the computer
Use Nero Recode to convert it to and MP4. Divide the movie into 1gb chunks and Maximize the Volume.
Use SUPER to convert it to an AVI / MPEG-4 / MP3.
Copy this to the Video folder of the Archos.

This is simply something that Archos does not want to admit is an issue. They want you to purchase the Cinema plugin.
