2005 BMWi uses oil. Smoke comes out of exhaust when car is started and if accelerated. Smoke does not smell like burnt oil - the oil is synthetic. What is the possible cause of this?

its burning oil! could be worn out piston rings/bore or valve stem seals/guides but check the engine breather system is not blocked first

What should the compressin be on a briggs

What is the compression ratio for my engine?

Briggs & Stratton side valve (L-Head) engines use a compression ratio of 6 to 1.Our Overhead Valve (OHV) engines use a compression ratio of 8.5 to 1.

What would cause my engine to "puff" smoke while it runs?

White/blue smoking usually indicates the burning of oil. Causes to this condition include:
  • Overfilling the crankcase with oil
  • Incorrect oil grade
  • Operating engine at greater than a 15 degree angle
  • Inoperative crankcase breather
  • Crankcase air leak
  • Blown head gasket
  • Worn cylinder and/or rings
  • Turning/Tilting the engine on its side for any reason (storage, changing oil, etc). If the engine has to be tilted, ensure the spark plug is facing upwards to help prevent oil from escaping the crankcase.
Also, be aware that any small air leak can cause an excess of air entering the crankcase and will create a higher oil mist than the breather is capable of handling. The excess oil will then return through the breather tube and back to the air filter. Engine oil capacity is dependant on your specific engine model. To determine your engine's oil capacity, please visit our Oil Capacitypage. Oil level checking and changing intervals are available on ourMaintenance Schedule page, as well as a hyperlink (text highlighted in blue) leading to oil changing procedures.
The "Oil" section of your Operator's Manual also contains this information. Other possible causes include operating or tilting the unit at an angle, an obstruction in the breather tube (located behind the air filter), damage to the cylinder/piston rings, etc.

10 hp tecumseh throwing oil out the breather tube

There is excessive blow- by from the combustion process which indicates worn rings /broken rings or scored bore (engine worn out or dusted). Check oil level in sump as excessive oil will also cause the problem

Oil leaks out of air filter an it smokes a lot

Check for a crankcase full of fuel, check for overfilled crankcase.
Tecumseh has a breather valve that can stick open. Otherwise its probably blow by from worn rings.

My car does not keep oil in it. About every few days i'm having to add oil because it starts ticking, what would cause this? Also, what would cause white smoke to come from my tailpipe?

oil leaks could be coming from a few spots ,valve cover gasket ,oil pan gasket and a bad harmonica balancer seal ,and the white smoke coming out your tail pipe is a sign of a blown head gasket ,check your dip stick and if the oil is creamy is your head gasket

Oil coming back through carbureter

This is quite common on Harley engines. The oil comes from the crankcase breather system. The engine breathes through vents in the rocker box covers and the heads. There is a "umbrella valve" in the center section of the rocker box covers. Over time, these rubber umbrellas will become stiff and not seal properly. They are easily replaced by removing the four bolts that hold the top rocker box cover on and replacing the "umbrellas" and gaskets.

Some riders choose to reroute the crankcase breathers underneath the engine by installing aftermarket breather systems on their bike.

Oil blows out of tube

You either have a head gasket going bad or your piston rings are shot which causes air to go down into the crankcase building up pressure which exits through the breather tube.

Oil blow by

A little blow by is normal. Make sure the oil level is correct. If there is excessive blow by, then check the reed valve under the valve cover. It may be damaged or loose.
