Kenmore series 90 washer agitator not working. Replaced lit switch, checked motor coupling. Worked for a while, then started acting up again. Motor is running. Sounds like a chain is being dragged across metal. If jiggle agitator or grab the base and rotate, sometime will engage. Do I need an agitator repair kit, even if the base is not turning too?

I hope this is not the problem, but I suspect you are right. Is it worth replacing the gear box or do I need a new washer? I'm broke right now so any quick fix will sure help us out.

    Tom

You could have a problem with the transmission/gear box.

it is the main mechanical device that is being driven by the motor to convert the rotating motor to the agitating action of the agitator.

you may need to replace the whole gear box.

    hi tom,

i guess a cheap fix would be to go to a salvage yard and get a used gear box to replaced your old one, or if it is still expensive, try to open the gear case and just replace worn out gears that you can find.

    tnx again,

ok tom, its up to you,

can i just make a request, the rating is just as important to us as answering your questions, a helpful rate could still deduct 0.01 points from my rating since i got an 87 already. can i request for a fixya to boost my rating further?

    i will greatly appreciate it.

tnx in advance, have a nice day.

Washer will not spin

if it agitates but will not spin it sounds like you either have a bad lid switch or clutch. check your lid switch first when opening and closeing the lid do you hear a click sound?

Kenmore Series 90 won't spin

AS LONG AS THE MOTOR RUNS, I WOULD CHECK THE CLUTCH RIGHT UNDER THE TUB TO SEE IF OIL HAS LEAKED INTO THE PADS CAUSING IT TO SLIP. IF NO OIL OR EXCESSIVE PAD DUST INDICATING WEAR, IT MAY BE A PROBLEM IN THE TRANSMISSION.

My Kenmore series 70 washer will wash and then the machine stop. If I move it to the rinse cycle it will start agitating again and then it will shut off again. It seems li9ke the spin cycle isn't working

Hello,
Welcome
Either of these three problems may be occurring.

Faulty Direct Drive Coupling (Whirlpool / Kenmore / Roper / Estate)
The Direct Drive (motor) Coupling may be broken. Many Whirlpool/Kenmore brands washing machines utilize a small, relatively inexpensive direct drive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other.

It can wear out over time or fail under overloading conditions. This protects your transmission from excessive loading.

Defective Lid Switch
Check lid switch for proper operation. Check the switch for continuity. If it is found to be open, replace the switch assembly.

All functions operate normally except the machine will not agitate.

The agitator is driven by a couple of different methods. The first is the agitator is splined and slips onto the matching splines of the agitator shaft from the transmission. The second is the use of a bell coupling which is splined to the agitator shaft as well and the agitator snaps onto the coupling. If the agitator does not agitate, first remove the agitator and watch the agitator shaft to see if it is working properly. This wil require a small load setting of water and the machine set to run. If the agitator shaft is working properly, it is either the splines on the agitator or the bell coupling that is defective. If the agitator shaft does not work properly, the problem is in the transmission.

Kenmore 90 Series Washer

Maybe. Sounds like the motor is not agitating in the other direction??? There is a controller on this type of machine which handles the starting...direction of the motor..this is by far the most common for your description.
next would be the timer or transmission.
to check trans..grab top lip of bowl it should be locked in both directions. tilt machine back..you should be able to spin the pulley in both directions it not its the trans
I'm sorry bout the flow of this...not used to doing it like this...think i'm slowly getting better????
