Blown surge protector

I have been suffering mains power spikes for some time (don't ask but it is self induced) and this has resulted in a component destroying its self. Upon inspecting the PCB there is, what i guess was a surge protector, in a charred heap, including the heatshrink protection. The silk screen on the PCB identifies this as TR301 on the top of the board but C309 underneath. It is now a charred pale green but i suspect it may have been blue at some point as it has suffered thermal dammage. Can anyone shed some light on what this component used to be, component manufacturer, ratings, alternate uprated part?

SOURCE: Where to replace burnt out PCB.

Unfortunatly I have the same problem but it seems the main MOSFET bolted to the heatsink (SSS4N60B) in the high voltage section has failed which I suspect has led to the destruction of the capacitors. I lost the 5v and 12v supply which happen to have the damaged caps in there circuit. See how you go but I'd be having a close look at that MOSFET as well.

After a lightening storm, my power surge strip got hit and damaged everything that was attached to it (i.e. the internet modem, blu-ray player, and Samsung TV). Our TV only has a blue screen. Help

Yep, power spikes kill. Power spikes kill all. Power spikes kill all forever. Replace all and get a new surge protector that costs at least $99. If you never need it it is called insurance. I am in FL the capitol of lightning. High priced surge protectors are cheeeeep when lightning is there.

I have a motororola model MBP8 PU babby montior quick working after power went out they turn on but but don't work

Is it plugged into a surge protector? When the power comes back on to a lot of residents at the same time, a power voltage spike occurs that can damage electronics. All items that have any electronic circuits, need to be protected by a surge protector. Surge protectors do not protect against lightning strikes.

Can anyone advise what might be wrong with my Acer Aspire L100. We had a power cut the other night and it knocked off her computer. The unit will not restart and is completely dead. Are there any simple...

I am assuming you weren't plugged into a surge protector when you lost power. During power outages, spikes in voltage occur, so what happens is there's no mechanism to interrupt that spike by grounding, which surge protectors are designed to do. Any laptop/computer components cannot handle this voltage spike as they are delicate to certain voltage tolerances. I hate to say it, but your laptop is toast.

Does my Vizio VF550 LCD HDTV 120z need to be plugged into a surge protector to be protected against storms or is there already one built in ?

Yes it must be plugged in to a surge protector, but don't get the cheap ones, buy a good one or you will be sending this to the repair shop when the current spikes. These sets are very sensitive to spikes. There is no protector built in on this set.

During our last storm my Bernina 170 just died. I had it on a surge protector, but it just doesn't turn on. While I love this machine, I also have a B 165, so I thought I would try my hand at fixing it...

If this is an older model, the power supply module is a little sensitive to mains spikes - I've had three that have suffered a similar fate and all have required replacement power-supplies - the switching transistor gets blown and this is a job only for the qualified service engineer. My suggestion, I'm afraid, is to have it checked-over by a service engineer. There is a glass fuse on the circuit board, but if blown, it's usually for a reason and 9 times out of 10, just replacing it results in a second blown fuse !!!

32 '' CRT won't turn on afer power surge

Follow these steps to troubleshoot the television not turning on:

Make sure the AC power cord is connected securely to a working wall outlet.
NOTE: If the television is plugged into a power strip or surge protector, unplug it from the power strip or surge protector and plug it directly into the wall outlet. If the issue is resolved, the problem is with the power strip or surge protector and not the television.

Press the POWER button on the television.
Press the POWER button on the remote control that was supplied with the television.
NOTE: If the television turns on and off using the POWER button on the television but does not respond to the POWER button on the remote control, troubleshoot the remote control.

Unplug the television power cord from the electrical outlet for 30 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into a known working electrical outlet.
Attempt to turn on the television.
IMPORTANT for the following models only:

KDF-E42A10
KDF-E50A10
KDL-V26XBR1
KDL-V32XBR1
KDL-V40XBR1
Unplugging the above television models from the electrical outlet may only be a temporary fix. The problem may reoccur after several months of use. To completely resolve the issue, a software update is available.

For all other models, service will be required if the troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue.

Surge Protector

Surge Protectors are devices that usually you plug your equipment to.. and it protects it from Voltage Spikes that would otherwise destroy the device without it.. saddly not all Surge Protectors are the sam.. some are completely useless..

If you are really serious about protecting your PC not just the hardware but also the data and your work.. might as well invest on a UPS(Uninterrupted Power Supply) unit.. it has everything a surge protector can offer and more..

Microwave hood combo

hi

power spikes are very damaging to a microwaves internal parts, it sounds like your transformer and/or magnetron are blown. if the unit is out of warranty I would reccomend getting a new microwave and also get a small single plug surge protector for it.

Instantly blows the 5 amp fuse next to the power cord plug.

You have a short in the power supply. Look at the regulator and or rectifier diodes. These are all on th primary side of the SMPS (switched mode power supply) the secondary side if shorted shouldn't cause a blown fuse at all.
