Coleman (RVP) 7000 AC unit compressor problem

I've got a '96 RV with a Coleman/RVP 7000 roof mounted AC unit. It started having issues with popping the breaker about 3 months ago. I figured it was because it's in Arizona and it gets a little warm here (110+). Just recently it quit working. The fan comes on, but the compressor won't stay on. I can hear it try (and see the lights dim slightly) but it kicks out after about 5 seconds. Then it tries again. And again. I've replaced the control module (there was a recall on these a while back), checked the thermostat and so on. I'm wondering if there is something I can do for this thing, or do I need to take it into a shop and get a new AC unit? I don't have the equipment to get it off the roof or deal with recharging the coolant.

Thanks.

I wish it was something as simple as the breaker. The unit doesn't power off, the compressor just won't power on. The fan keeps running fine (but blows lots of hot air). I can hear the compressor trying (a low rumble/growl along with a slight dimming of the lights) for a few seconds, then it gives up. It repeats this over and over until I finally give it a rest and shut it all off.

I suspect that I've either lost the compressor or the motor starter capacitor, neither of which I'm thrilled about. I don't have the rig to recharge the coolant if the compressor is bad.

So, it's off to the local RV shop for me.

    But thanks for the input.

I had a problem with my coleman mach 3 AC, we were at an RV park up at lake shasta CA and the fan would stay on but the compressor would come on for a few seconds and then trip off. It was the motor overload relay on the compressor that was tripping. the RV park was old and apparently the wiring to the panelboard at the RV park was too small, when you are drawing a lot of current there was too much voltage drop across their line, to make up for this the motor tries to draw more current and heats up the motor overload and it trips off. I solved this problem by buying an autoformer from Camping World, it senses a voltage drop and automatically boosts the voltage.

I am now having a seperate problem, the compressor is either locked up or has too much back pressure and trips off the service breaker when trying to start. The only solution I can see with my current problem is to replace the entire unit.

I just had the same problem with my rooftop AC on our camper last summer just before pulling out for a long hot weekend. While mine may not be yours, I desperately sought a difficulty I could fix within 10 minutes. The breaker in the electric box, the least expensive item, was the culprit. Breakers fail over time and the ones on RV's are the most economical available. Mine tripped as soon as the compressor engaged but held with only the fan. I switched the wires with the microwave breaker and enjoyed the weekend.

Btu of coleman 7830-901

That should be a 30,000 Btu unit. Its been a while since I worked on them. The 78 is the series or model, the 30 is the capacity or btu's and the 901 indicates it is a Copeland compressor.
