A large rectangular box appears on the screen. It floats from channel to channel. It is appearing on 3 channels now. It will stay on one channel for several weeks then move to a new channel. The box takes up about 2/3 of the lower part of the screen and there is a narrow border of picture. Thank you. PP
I went through the menu options but found no reference to "close captioning". If we press the close caption button on the remote, it give us options of:
- caption ch 1
- caption ch 2
- text ch 1
- text ch 2
No other options.
Seems to (intermittently) give a black rectangle on any of the
selections. (This in a small Toshiba tv/vcr combo)We have the same problem.

By your description it sounds as though the closed captioning option has been turned on on the TV. Only certain programs are CC capable and that accounts for the box moving from channel to channel as some broadcasts are not CC CAPABLE. Go to the menu on the tv and ensure closed captioning is disabled. This should resolve the issue. If you need more help please let me know.

This is simple: set in the closed caption menu (some cable boxes also have it) called TEXT. Look in the menu and turn it off first in the set and also in the box used if used for signal.
Odd feature and never really took off--designed so some channels like PBS etc could broadcast text.
Try website like Remotes.com to buy the tv original remote to used.U will used the tv original remote to turn to channel 3 with ease. After u have the tv original remote push the menu button go into Closed Captioning functions turn off like TEXT 1,2,3...The big black box will not appear on the screen again.Tv used it manually control buttons up and down channels trying to get to channel 3.U will never get it to tv channel 3 because tv channel 3 was not save on it memory list of on the tv turn manually channels buttons programming memory.Tv have a manual button said MEMU button on it tv front bazel frame?Yes.Might could used the Menu button on the tv frame to get in to turn off TEXT 1,2,3...to stop the big black box to show up on the tv screen again.
Try and turn off the closed captioning. I had the same problem and it turned out that the closed captioning was on t1 instead of OFF. Hope this helps!!!!
Check to see that you don't have any channel locks or parental parental permission measures deployed. If so remove them, this includes V-Chip, and Parental lock out on the remote, and check your TVs menu items. What channel are being affected by this problem? Give channel number and channel type.
On the reomte control (bottom) left of the sleep button is a cc button, push that until "OFF" appears on the screen. The close caption box should disappear. It worked for me, finally.
When a black box appears on the screen it means that your closed captions are on and set to TEXT. When the closed captions are set to CC1, it puts the words on the screen and when set to TEXT it puts a black box in the center of the screen. Go into the set's menu, navigate to the closed captions page and set the captions to OFF.
